Some Scion tips and Easter Eggs

Lengthy post:

  1. how do i enable/disable the seatbelt reminder buzzer noise using the trip meter button? to enable/disable that annoying seatbelt reminder buzzer, follow these steps using the trip meter button, but make sure you

still buckle up!:

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'ODO' is displayed. step 2 turn the key off. turn the key back to the 'on' position. within six seconds of doing so, press and hold the trip meter button for ten seconds. after ten seconds, buckle the driver's side seatbelt. step 3 the buzzer by default is set to on. once you've held the trip meter button for ten seconds and then buckled the driver's side seatbelt, the lcd will then disply 'b-OFF', telling you that the buzzer is now turned off. you can now let go of the trip meter button. if pressed again in this mode, you will set the buzzer back to on, 'b-ON'.

*note* if the battery or combination meter is disconnected, you will have to follow the procedure again.

  1. how do i reset and/or specify the interval for the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button? the tC's ecu (computer) memorizes the distance your car has traveled. scion recommends that you change your oil every 5,000 miles. when your car exceeds 4,500 miles, the ecu will flash the maintenance required light for 12 seconds after turning the key to 'on'. if it exceeds 5,000 miles, then the ecu keeps the maintenance required light on until it is reset. so, how do you reset it? follow these steps (this procedure is also listed in the tC owner's manual, pg. 96):

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'ODO' is displayed. step 2 turn the key off. now, push and hold the trip meter button. while holding the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on'. step 3 while you continue to hold the trip meter button, you will see on the lcd disply five (5) small dashes and they will begin to 'count down' rather quickly.

step 4 continue holding the trip meter button and once all the dashes have been cleared, your lcd will display six zeros (000000) - release the trip meter button now - and then the lcd will display 'ODO' and your current mileage. at this time, your 'maintenance required'/oil change light has been reset.

*note* each dash represents 1,000 miles. if you like to change your oil every 3,000 miles for example, release the trip meter button when only two (2) dashes remain. that way, you will get the reminder light at the next 3,000 mile mark instead of 5,000.

  1. how do i clear the 'maintenance required'/oil change light using the trip meter button?

if at the time you changed your oil, you or the person changing your oil did not reset the 'maintanence reqiured'/oil change light or if you would just rather turn it off instead of setting the interval (aka- the lazy way to turn off that annoying light), follow these steps:

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position. step 2 reset both trip meters to zero. you can reset the trip meters to zero by selecting trip a or trip b and holding in the trip meter button for five (5) seconds. step 3

after both trip meters are reset, select any trip meter and hold in the trip meter button and start the car. step 4 continue holding the trip meter button until the "maintenance required' light disappears.

  1. how do i enable/disable the 'needle jump' when starting the car using the trip meter button?

if you don't like the cool 'needle jump' feature when you first start your car, then you're a retard... er, i mean, if you would like to disable this annoying feature or if you turned it off by accident when NOT following the directions on the other trip meter easter eggs, then follow these steps (similar steps as seatbelt reminder buzzer, but you start with the lcd on 'trip a' or 'trip b', NOT 'ODO':

step 1 turn the key to the 'on' position. using the trip meter button, toggle the lcd until 'trip a' or 'trip b' is displayed on the lcd, NOT 'ODO'. step 2 turn the key off. now, push and hold the trip meter button. while holding the trip meter button, turn the key to 'on'. continue to hold the trip meter button for 10 seconds. step 3 the needle jump by default is set to on. once you've held the trip meter button for ten seconds, the lcd will then display 's-OFF', telling you that the needle jump is now turned off. you can now let go of the trip meter button. if pressed again in this mode, you will set the buzzer back to on, 's-ON'.

*note* if the battery or combination meter is disconnected, you will have to follow the procedure again.

  1. what are the hidden radio welcome messages on the tC head unit (works with 1st gen scion pioneer head units)? these are what we call 'easter eggs'. some people consider them silly and that they aren't 'needed', but honestly, have any other car makers out there been as creative as scion with offering stuff like this? no, i didn't think so you pontiac g6 lover!

ok, on the standard pioneer head units that are included on every scion (so far), there are some custom, pre-set welcome messages. follow these steps to get the message you want:

welcome message

(Scion In Japanese) insert cd and set to track number 2, press and hold 'Folder Down' and 'Text' simultaneously and turn the key so 'ACC' is off.

  1. how do i customize my own text for the welcome message on the tC head unit? so you'd like to 'name' your car something ghey like "icdedppl" huh? well, you can! follow these steps: 2nd gen hu (2006+) step 1 turn the key to 'ACC' and turn the radio on. now, turn the key off. step 2 on the radio, press and hold 'MUTE' and while continuing to hold down 'MUTE', turn the key to 'ACC'. you should now see a horizontal line on the head unit lcd display start to flash. you can now let go of 'MUTE'. step 3 within 15 seconds, press and hold 'PRESET 1' and turn the key off. you should now see a flashing cursor with the letter 'A' displayed. step 4 now use the 'PRESET 3' and 'PRESET 4' buttons to change to the letters/characters you want to use. when you find the letter/character that you would like to use, press 'PRESET 6' and the cursor will move over to the next position. if you need to delete a character, press 'PRESET 5'. once you have complete your message, press and hold 'PRESET 6' for five seconds to confirm your selection.
*note* there is a 16 character maximum for the welcome message for the 2st gen hu.

  1. what is the wire color diagram for the stock pioneer head unit's wiring harness in the tC? wire name/description wire color GR (ground) brown ACC (ignition ACC) gray B+ (12V RAD)

blue ANT (antenna amplifier) orange FL+ pink FL- violet FR+ light green FR- blue RL+ brown RL- yellow RR+ red RR- white

*note 1* the ground is located behind the instrument/gauge panel *note 2* the tweeters are wired into the front speakers *note 3* +B to ground is always 12V *note 4* 12V from ACC to ground when key is at ACC or ON position

  1. what are the bulb sizes for the side turn/mirror turn signals? the side turn/mirror turn signals do not use bulbs. each mirror uses two led's instead. if you want to change these out or change them to a different color, you must take apart your side mirrors and de-solder the default led's and solder in new led's. instructions with a complete walk-through on how to replace these led's can be found here. thanks kaeon!

  2. i disconnected my battery and now my power windows and power moonroof aren't working properly. what's wrong? the power window system and power moonroof actually memorize their initial positon and if you disconnect the battery or if you burn out a fuse or disconnect just the right switch connector, they lose their memory and they need to be reset. when this happens, the led's located in the power window switches will blink when you turn on the car, the power windows 'one-touch' feature will no longer work and the power moonroof will not entirely open. you need to to reset them by following these procedures:

resetting the power windows

step 1 turn the key in the ignition to 'on'.

step 2 on the driver's side control, push down (do not use 'one-touch' down) the power window switch for the driver's side window and lower the window halfway.

step 3 pull up (do not use 'one-touch' up) the power window switch until the window closes and hold the switch for *at least* one second.

step 4 repeat these steps for the passenger side window on the passenger door window control. the windows should now open and close like they should.

resetting the power moon roof

step 1 turn the key in the ignition to 'on'.

step 2 keep pressing the sliding roof switch to the close side until the center glass panel is fully closed.

step 3 if the switch remains pressed for approximately two more seconds after the panel is fully closed, the sliding roof ECU memorizes the fully closed position.

step 4 the center panel glass returns in the open direction a little and informs that initialization is complete.

  1. my tire pressure light is on and i know my tires are correctly inflated. how do i re-initialize the tire pressure warning system? the tire pressure monitor detects any changes in the tire inflation pressure. therefore, it must initialize and store it in its memory if the tires or wheels have been replaced or the tires have been rotated. you can re-initialize the system by following these steps: step 1 check and make sure that your tires are inflated to the correct pressure step 2 turn the ignition switch to the ON position. If the low tire pressure warning light comes on, push and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch (in the glove box) until the warning light turns off and then release the switch. step 3 now press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch until the low tire pressure warning light blinks three times. step 4

initialization is *not* completed until driving at the vehicle speed of 19 mph or over for more than one hour. the tire pressure monitoring starts when initialization is completed.

Some of the functions will probably be similar. The radio one will probably only work with a Pioneer head unit.
