All trolling aside... If money is the only consideration, the Prius is NOT the best choice. If saving the planet is your goal, then the Prius isn't nearly enough...don't bother...you need to head to D.C. If you want to encourage manufacturers to implement other solutions to the imminent depletion of oil so your kids or grandkids will still have some (better still, won't NEED it), then maybe the Prius is for you. If this is the case, you're already smart enough to know that money is not the only thing. If you don't have kids and/or you don't give a s*it, might as well buy a Hummer and stuff the oil man's pockets. If that's the case, you're probably an asshole anyway and you deserve to waste your money. Don't worry, you'll be dead before the gas runs out. ================

2 points here. First is that the Prius batteries are not known at all for crapping out and are known for going for over 200K miles plus. Second is that there is not much loss of material in recycling, the point there being to get the most out of the recycle to maximize profit. The logic presented here leads one to crawl back into the cave to live and use no earth resources at all. Why pick this over everything else one uses daily?

I get (here in NJ in the winter) 55 MPG when I use PruisFoot while driving, more like 51-52 when I need to drive it gutfully.
The traction battery does not get discharged. It just does not, so this can be removed as an issue. Every time the engine is used and every time the vehicle slows down, energy that is normally wasted in a regular car is reclaimed in that battery. In fact the only time that I have seen the engine come on just to provide a recharge to the battery was last summer on the Thruway in a jam with the AC blasting, using that power up.
I get 55 MPG tankfull after tankfull on commutes between Readington and Somerset NJ. Google the route to envision the type of driving, but it is mixed, some back roads, some 55 MPH US road, some Interstate 287. Very little if at all urban driving.
One does not 'off the engine while coasting to a stop'. The Prius does this all by itself, and shuts it off at other times as well. It is a very intelligent system.

I didn't. I bought my 4th Corolla instead; perfectly decent car & made the most financial sense, but at this point... boring.
If another Corolla, then prob. not until '10. If not, then maybe a Prius; it's what I really want. But would be a large present to myself.

If I'd bought the '04 Prius (mid line pkg.) instead of the '04 Corolla (LE), it would have, over the course of a 6 year ownership, have cost me $5K more for the Prius. (I did the math again & again, & always came up with the same figure.) OTOH, gas was not anywhere near $3.41/gallon then... OTOH, they've phased out the tax benefit...

Forget comparing the Prius to a 4cy Corolla, when it comes to price. Have you priced a Pruis lately? At $28,000 a 2007 Prius should be compared to a V6 Camry. LOL

I found it to be one of the most responsive cars I ever drove, thanks to the electric motor developing 100% toruqe at 0 RPMs. And yet, most Prius owners act as if there's a rotten egg between their right foot and the accelerator.
I didn't really find it that way. The 2nd gen was better than the original, but still kind of cramped (I'm a big guy...)

I got 48 in a new '87 Corolla, carbeurated, 90 degree weahter with the AC on. The premium price doesn't really justify 6 MPG...
