Apart from being ally, you'll note they are quite long from the intake chamber to the ports in the head. This is designed to give the engine better low -down torque and basically works by causing the intake air to speed up as it transits down the long runners,..when it hits the combustion chamber along with a squirt of fuel from the injectors, great turbulence occurs, causing a better or more complete burn. The 2.2L is one of the smoothest pulling motors I've driven. It rarely labors and in manual-trans form, allows you to do less down shifting. 3rd gear will handle most corners easily.
