CB radio suggestion...

Greets.



This is kinda/sorta off topic, but the usenet group on cb radio is hellish with rants, off-topic junk, and flamewars. Too bad.



Anyway, I drive cross country twice a year in my 02 Camry. I was thinking that it might be interesting this time (next month) to get a CB radio to monitor and occasionally xmit.



I don't want a full blown dash install. But I don't want some Mickey Mouse, plug it into the cig lighter and let it sit on the seat thing either. Also, I know the antenna makes a huge difference in performance. So...magnetic rooftop and run the cable out the (always slightly open) window? Trunk magnetic mount? Bumper mount?



I've been away from this stuff for 20+ years so I'm clueless about current products out there. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Tom, I see you have a US Ham license. Why would you want CB . There must be loads of 2 Mtr and 70 Cmt Repeaters as you cross the USA. plus IRPL links.

Howdy. Cause I just want road reports from truckers et al. I don't usually monitor 2 meter anymore; many are PL'd and closed and I don't usually hear a lot on the Interstate anyway. And, I'm not really a rag-chewer type; I'm more of a lurker/auteur.

I just thought it would be fun to have something else to listen to on long interstate road trips and CB seemed to be the way to go. I've been driving I40 (and old Route 66) for 30+ years and I was amazed at how much truck traffic was on the road when I went back in February. It just continues to increase. Most rest stops where I pulled in at night were *covered* with trucks as were lots of the "view-downhill" onramps.

How about SSB? I recall back in the day when I had my CB that the single side band had greater range. The question is, do truckers use that on the highways like they did/do with channel 19 with CBs?

Tom, I use a radio by K40, and the antenna is also by K40 with a magnetic mount on the roof. I pass the cable thru the rear door. The thick weather stripping around the door forms a nice seal around the cable.
