We've seen 2 1992 to 1996 Toyota Camrys with Gabriel front struts (bearing plate) come off and hit the front hood. Is this a common problem? Thanks.

no. i have not heard of that problem. mine is dying also and i need to replace them with OEM

Changed mine recently - original Toyota part - Internet dealer, -- no problems, works great.
Two caveats:
1) don't bother trying to separate the old struts from the ball studs at the hood, mine simply wouldn't release - just unscrew them 2) use a hook tool to release the wiring clip attached to the right side base, then a flat blade screwdriver to push apart the connection at the interlocking tab - no amount of pulling seemed to work.
