Heater Blower motor

The blower on my 99 Camry is suddenly only working on the two highest settings. The AC itself seems to come on when the switch is turned to any speed setting, but the blower itself doesn't start until turned to the higher speeds. I asked about it on "AllExperts.com and was told the problem is the fan blower resistor. Not that I doubt the fine folks at AllExperts.com, but I thought a second opinion would be good before investing in the new part, and the effort to replace it.

Thanks!

Yep, sounds right. The resistor pack is what lets you run the blower on the lower speeds (it eats up voltage, so the blower motor spins slower). When you select the higher speed, the resistors are bypassed and the blower motor is able to use all 12 volts of the electrical system.

Thanks "Q", I found the resistor on the web for around $20, so I think I'll go ahead and replace it.

It's pretty easy to replace once you figure out that you need to remove the black plastic glovebox undertray by using the provided tabs on the near edge. The resistor pack is located on the left hand side close to the firewall. All you need is a stubby screwdriver (Philips #2, IIRC).

Yeah, blower motor circuits have been the same for about 500 years, pretty standard theory of operation on most cars. Rule of thumb is if you can't turn the blower on at all, you should look to the fan motor or a wiring problem. If only high speed works, look to the resistor pack.
