Looking for Oakland area shops with a good rep. The one I used to use in Hayward, German Engine Repair, is on hiatus until, apparently, the owner finds a new lead mechanic.

Not quite in Oakland, David, but Peninsula Automotive in Campbell can't be beat.

Dave, Thanks for tip. Just talked to the owner of German Engine Repair and they'll be opening for business again in about a month. I've known Bob for years and have a good relationship with him. I did check-out this one place in Berkeley called 'the buslab', but they wanted to charge me a "corking fee", like in a restaurant, because I'm not buying the engine from them. I can't say I like that arrangement...
I didn't call Greg's, but got a good impression from his web site. Anyone that races VDubs is on my good list.
I bought my current beetle from him, few years back now. It's a "daily" grade of car but he took good care of it. He was very honest with the car and it's flaws, and nothing has gone wrong with it that isn't the result of me abusing the poor thing.
So if you ever cross over to the west side of the bay give him a call. ;)
The Buggy Shop in San Jose isn't bad either, the owner is a tad surly but he does good work and won't bullshit you.
Try Letcher's VW in Pinole. 510-724-2335. They've done good work for me.
