Air.

You don't need to take it apart to see how it differs from a watercooled engine. Just look at the cylinders for starters. They have fins & are outside of the actual "block". The cam, crank & other internal parts will look very similar

I need to take it apart anyway, it does not work. The scrapyard owner told me it was trashed because it smoked. Go figure.

Yes...and care must be taken during disassembly so that the air does not escape. Have a big baggy ready.

This being the air that cools the engine?

Nope...the "magical air"....it is akin to the magical smoke that is installed into all electrical parts at the factory....as long as it stays inside the part is good, but once the magic smoke gets *out* of the part it is bad... JT

Unfortunately, buying two bad engines won't make one good one because the same things tend to wear, so the odds are you'll end up with two duff engines. The most important component is the engine case, this is the starting point.
