Fuel Tank Capacity - 71 Type 1

Feb 23, 2004 4 Replies

Want to find out how empty my fuel tank is when the fuel gauge is pointing to "R." I ran it to "R" then filled the tank up to the top (extra few slow squirts of the gas pump). Took 12.6 US gallons.

I don't have an owner's manual for this '71 bus. I do have a '72 owner's manual, though. It and Bentleys both say the fuel tanks for these Type

1's all hold 15.8 US gallons. Would that be right for the '71?

So, is it normal/likely that the tank is holding 3 gallons when the gauge is pointing at "R"?

Yer cornfuzzling me. :-)

You're talking about your type *2* bus, right? ... and not a type 1, right? But your type 2 has a type 1 engine and who's on first, right? 8-)

The '71 & '72 `Without Guesswork' agrees with the 15.8 US gallons for total capacity and states 1.3 gallons as the reserve.

No, what's on the left and up? First. The '71 Type 2 might have a Type 1 but the '72 2 has a 4 times 2 carburetors 3 years running Colin : ] ]

Er, um, I meant Type 2 (bus).

Yeah, you're right. I was /thinkin'/ Type 2, but /writin'/ Type 1. 'Twas the engine type that controlled my fingers. Sorry 'bout the cornfuzlon.

So in my case, then, since an "R" reading takes 12.6 US gallons, I have

3.2 US gallons left.
