original paint as primer?

Question

Hi all,I know this topic has already been covered here, but I couldn't find it in  Anyway, here is the question:May I use the fender's original paint as a primer, should I sand it 1st? should I use a proper primer before painting?Stripping the original paint is completely out of my budget, besides it is in pretty good condition, is just the wrong color.thanksAnt

As long as there's no hidden rust under the original paint, and all bare metal from sanding is properly primed, you shouldn't have a problem, IF (big IF here)

You're sure there is no residual wax on the paint. The paint is light sanded (called "scuffed") to ensure proper adhesion You are absolutely positively sure there is no residual wax on (or in) the paint. There is no trace of a previous clear coat.

I repeated myself for a reason. Wax, oil or other impurities will guarantee fish eyes or other problems with paint adhesion.

Original paint is great primer as long as it is in solid condition... No flaking, rust bubbles, etc...I'd probably sand it with 400 grit and then apply a primer/sealer then topcoat.
