Procedure

Hi Everyone,

Up until now, I have been puttering along with the Beetle, fixing what needed fixing, but I have also been reading VWT's '71 Super Beetle restoration, and it got me thinking about the procedure to follow for semi-restoring my car (i.e. a "Boatcop"

restoration).

If you were to suggest one method in which I should go about all of this, what would it be?

  1. Strip Interior
  2. Repair interior sheetmetal/brakes/chassis system (steering and suspension) as needed
  3. Remove all exterior trim/windows
  4. Bodywork and Paint car
  5. Reassemble Interior/Exterior
  6. Install new engine
  7. Go Home Happy?

Time isn't really the issue, but I would like to be driving this thing by summer. The engine is basically done, but I don't know where to turn next...Any help would really be beneficial!

Thanks,

Pete

Hey Pete,

I recall asking a similar question back in March of 2003. Check it out:

The order of things you listed is pretty much what I'm doing. I broke it out in a few major chunks; easier for my mind to digest. Here is my plan that I came up with after reviewing other people's strategies, including Alan's (the boatcop).

  1. rebuilt trans
  2. body and paint
  3. interior
  4. new engine
  5. misc chassis work (disc brake conversion, etc)
  6. whatever else (I'll be on the road by this point)

Right now, I'm halfway thru number 2.
