Wide tires without narrowing the beam

SERIOUSLY, now - how does one narrow the rear end in an IRS? Can I just cut an half an inch off the middle of each drive shaft and weld it back up? It would lower the car too, correct? I ask because I have some real nice, original steel skirts I'd like to put on the '58 - and still keep the wide tires.

to properly narrow the rear of an IRS is the same basic principal as "tubbing" old american iron....you would need to relocate the IRS pivots inward, and possibly need custom trailing arms(depending on how much you wanted to narrow them)...and NO you can not just cut and weld the axles...well i guess you can, but don't count on them lasting....the axles are hardened and welding would screw it all up(the short version, LOL)...you can get custom aftermarket axles that are narrower than stock....

Okay, I sure understand the hardening bit. Welding that would certainly destroy the temper. Relocate the IRS pivots? Custom trailing arms? Gotta look into that, you know, get edacated. "Jeeves! My books!" (But Master, you can't read.)

Hi.Anyone else remember turning stock rims around(so the air fill valves were on the inside which was real practical)to get that WIDE track look.And then painting them Rust-Oleum "chrome".Steve

John,.........If you find a good way to do this please post a how to, or a parts place,....................I really don't want to "narrow the rearend at all, But I would like to use some of those new Mustang "bullitt" wheels on the Dune Buggy...............Anyone else know of some sort of modified Angle arm piece for an IRS rearend that will allow for some wide rims to the inside..................Not worried too much about the Buggy Body, It's already in modification process to allow for other issue associated with the IRS rearend.
