V70 Instrumentation wierdness

Anyone seen this or something similar?

I've got a 99 V70 and the instrumentation (or parts of it) randomly work/dont work. When it doesn't work, the speedo goes to 0, the odometer goes blank and some of the idiot lights come on. Usually brake, abs and sometimes the "winter mode" light will come on and flash rapidly. Then after a few minutes... All back to normal.

Wierd....

I have come across ignition switches on V70's causing grief often brought on by people haveing x thousand keys on their keyring (you should have seen my wife's key ring!!). Ours just stopped working but did not cause an issue with the dash board. Bloody expensive ato replace as well so got mine from a write off at a breakers.

Just a suggestion - because I've experienced dash light weirdness with a S70 of a similar age to your V70, and that was down to the ignition switch.

Expensive?

I bought one from a Volvo main dealer, and it was somewhere around 20-30 UK pounds. Not particularly what I'd class as an expensive part.

Not difficult or expensive to change, either - take the shroud off from the steering column, and on the opposite side to where you use the key, take / prise the black cover / plug from the switch. Undo the two bolts securing it in place. Line up the new one, screw the bolts back in, put the cover / plug switch back in to this new switch, and put the shroud back in place. 10 minutes, being thorough.

I've got a 98 V70 that had similar symptoms....althought they tended to last more than a few minutes: ABS warning lights, TRACS off, odometer going to zero (not that I was stopped), etc....and after a while they would begin to work, only to fail again....(didn't have winter mode since it was a manual transmission V70...yeah...very hard to find)

It was the ABS/Speed/tracking control computer that was defective....cost a fortune to replace.

This happened to both my '98 and '99 within the same month. Cost me a fortune. Pete
