Death rattle

We have 86 8V GTI... at idle, around 800-850rpm it's got a death rattle...

Neighbor insists it's exhaust, but that is new... any heat shields down there that might be loose?

At 950 to 1000rpm it sounds fine.

: Heat shield, CAT has fallen apart, small rocks in the CAT heatshield, : coke bottle hanging by a wire in the door panel with a note saying "Ha, : I see you finally found it you rich SOB (true story... well, people for : some reason think it is true). Take your pick.

I gotta find some ramps (or at least a jack I guess ;-)

Been poking around inside the engine compartment and haven't found anything that could be doing it. The cat might be right...

Trying to track down the broken shift linkage a few weeks back I stopped some guy walking down the street and asked him if he'd hop in the car for a minute and move the shifter around until I could find the rods that went together. I assured him I wasn't nuts, he slowly got in but I'm sure once he moved the stick he could tell I was telling the truth...

Get ramps, I wouldn't go crawling under a car without a jack.
