need paint info for 92 Jetta GL

I have a 1992 Volkswagon Jetta GL, built in Mexico. It is bright red - I believe that VW calls this paint Tornado Red. It has a white base or primer coat underneath the red, which makes it much brighter than if it went on over a gray primer.

I know I can get the tornado red paint almost anywhere, but no one seems to know the exact shade of white for the base/primer coat. If the shade is off a bit, it will make the red topcoat not mach the rest of the car. The dealer doesn't seem to know the specifications for the white base/primer coat, so I am hoping that someone in the group will know.

That explains why my paintjob doesn't match the interior paint.

They used grey primer.

Having painted a few (hundred) cars (trucks and airplanes), I can tell you that the primer color won't make a hill of beans difference in topcoat color UNLESS you don't put enough top on to cover the primer. If color match depended on the primer color AND the topcoat color, you would never even get close.

Use a light colored primer and topcoat as normal. A color mismatch is generally due to either; a. the new paint was mixed incorrectly; b. the application method needs to be changed (in the case of metallics); or c. the original paint on the car has discolored or faded. Fading is quite normal and can be VERY pronounced, even after a few weeks. If it is very far off, you can try tinting a bit, but you better know what you are doing.

I painted a 68 MGB a bright yellow many years ago. On that car, the convertible top folds out and covers about 1/2 of the panel forward of the trunk lid when the top is up. After 3 weeks in the sun, I put the top down and was amazed at the HUGE difference in color. The part in the sun actually got WAY darker.

Good Luck, Mike

It's hard to get good work done these days. Everyone's scared of getting screwed and alota people are interested in finding suckers or ways of cutting corners to turn a higher profit.

Oh well, huh?
