Radio stuck in SAFE, I know the code

Hi:

1992 Jetta, replaced fuse for the radio, as expected, SAFE appeared on the display. Now, when I press AM/FM button and then the SCAN button, "1000" should appear on the display acc. to the instructions. The display is stuck on SAFE and nothing is happening. Any tips/tricks to get it out of this SAFE mode?

I've re-programmed this radio before, recently when I changed my battery and it was OK then, I don't know what's wrong now.

I seem to remember having to hold down MODE and SCAN to get to the next step. Try a search on google.com if this doesn't work. This topic has been covered in this NG before, and should be archived at google.
