EGR v Fuel Consumption

I have a 1996 300Tdi and I have been thinking about blanking off the EGR.
Anyway 3 weeks ago I cut a baked bean tin lid to an oval shape to fill the
blank, why bother buying a plate when you can make one.
Since then and over 2 tanks my fuel consumption has shot up, last tank
almost 36mpg... keeping to around 60mph, the run to work being 26miles on
dual carriageways.
So to all of you who are thinking about doing it give it a go.
The sad thing is I am looking for a D3 at the moment so may have to say
goodbye to the fuel saving.
Anyone know where I can get a good 2005/2006 TDV6 S with 7 seats.

Regards
Martyn

Re: EGR v Fuel Consumption

Not done the maths yet, but put =A340(one mark above 1/2 full) in the
TD5 Disco last week and got to just outside Galway before i had to
fill up (352 ish miles).

Glad to hear it's so effective, have tried to remove mine but there's
not enought room to get a ring spanner in there - the hex screws
adjacent also cause a problem - how did you do yours Martyn? (also is
it best hot or cold?)
