OT: MSN Messenger with Windows XP

Just (finally!) installed XP, and got the latest version of MSN Messenger running on it, but the contacts list in Outlook Express always used to change as contacts came online and went offline, and now it doesn't. It seemed to work with Windows Messenger, but it doesn't with the latest MSN Messenger, which I've been assured is far better.

Any suggestions?

Use Windows Messenger. MSN Messenger has no OE integration.

Why did MSN Messenger integrate absolutely fine with OE when I was running Win98 then?

Can you please just piss off. Nobody here likes you. I'm more than willing to take advice, but (and with all due respect to Conor), that particular bit of advice wasn't believable as I've had the same levels of OE integration from MSN Messenger before, albeit on a different OS.

And a different version of Messenger which, in Win98, wasn't MSN Messenger.

A different version of Messenger quite possibly, but it was definitely MSN Messenger.

FWIW, I've just tried updating Windows Messenger to the latest one (v5.1) but it refused to run - just encountered some sort of an error when I tried to load it. And it doesn't seem as good as MSN anyway, so I'll stick with not quite so good levels of integration for now.

Under the misguided apprehension that anyone could give a f*ck, I just thought I'd mention that a friend mentioned to me that it's a problem with the latest version of MSN Messenger (which I guess I didn't have before), so I'm downloading version 6 from oldversion.com to see if that works better.

I've never known MSN messenger to work with OE. I'm happy tho :)

Actually in alot of respects it far exceeds MSN. No crappy adware, just a plain simple IM client without loads of stupid frippery.

I don't think it ever has. I do think that he's confusing MS Messenger, which was the name of the IM client in Win9x with OE integration, with MSN Messenger.

I can pretty confidently assure you that he is confusing no such thing.
