which version of the 240sx has the best lines? I don't like 1992 240sx.

I really like the style of the 1991 240sx but the 1992 version appears ugly to me. I passed up a really good deal on a 1992 because i just did not like its looks. I like the mx3's as far as they look. Is this subjective or do most people have the same taste?

I find the 91 virtually indistinguishable from the 92. What is it about the

92 that you don't like?

Virtually?

Aside from the wheels (maybe), the two model years are exactly the same.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only change that was ever made to the S13 body was when it lost the pignose in 1991. Other than that, it was the same for the entire production run.

Maybe he's seen a 2 door coupe and prefers the 3 door fastback?

There were 3 versions of 240SX in the USA. 2 door notch back coupe.

3 door fastback coupe. One year only 2 door Convertible - USA only (Canada too?).

USA chassis codes. '89-'90 HS13 240SX KA24E 2 door coupe (H for KA24E) '89-'90 RHS13 240SX 3 door Fastback coupe (R for Fastback) '91-'94 MS13 240SX 2 door coupe (M for KA24DE) '91-'93 RMS13 240SX 3 door Fastback coupe '91-'93 KMS13 240SX 2 door coupe (K for HICAS) (Canada only). '91-'93 KRMS13 240SX 3 door Fastback coupe '93-'94 unknown chassis code for convertables

'95-'98 S14 240SX KA24DE (all 2 door coupes - fastback 180SX (K)RPS13 P for SR20DET continued to be made and sold in Japan alongside S14)

All USA S13 models had KA24(D)E, all had pop-up lamps (so notch back is a factory made One-via, a 180SX frontend on a Silvia backend). Nose had two fake 'vent' slots with louvered trim blanking them each side of nissan badge, center divide in rad intake and rectangular indicators / side lamps until face lift mid 91. Face lift nose had no fake vents on upper surface, no divide in rad intake and almond shaped side / indicator lamps. Bigger brakes late '91. 13 teardrop holes in early S13 wheels, facelift got 7 spoke wheels. Some low spec ones may have steel wheels and plastic trims.

Possibly, but the fastback was available throughout the production run. I still don't understand his model year preference.

Oh, and I don't know where you picked up calling it a '3 door', but only pansy Saab drivers use that term. Stop it.

You left out the L in HLS13 and RHLS13, if we're being pedantic. Those of us who don't spend all day reading DriftNRice.com generally find 'S13' or S14' to be sufficiently specific.

But hey, it's ok, man. I had a Porsche poster on my wall when I was

  1. I can relate.

The 'pignose".

Hey, I know you! You're that kid that's always pestering me in the mall parking lot! Have you gotten your license yet?

Personally, I loved the lines on my '89 240SX Fastback. Couldn't beat it, damn good looking cars. I think the ugliest ones were the convertable 240's (1993 and 1994 only years made) and the back end of the coupes were hideous as well. Just my .02

I looked at a red 1991 rebuild. And I just loved the lines. I had a very good deal on a white 1992 that I reluctantly passed on because I didn't like the style of body. It reminded me of a datsunB210. I like a rounded shape. I find it too elongated and the large partition between the side windows is not pleasant looking for me. I've been looking all over to find one close to home to look at. The pics on the net are not 100%. I guess the body of the rebuild may be different from original. I don't like the look of the 89,90 etc celicas either. White is my least favourite colour. Thanks for the good responses.

I found two 1991 or 1992 240sx's(dark colours) in parking lots and I did like them both. I think the problem was that the car was white and the black partition stands out too much.

the vin# for the 1991 I looked at is JN?MS36S3MWO?97?8

Ah, I see. Well, they're (the S13's, exclusive of the fastback/coupe/convertible variations) the same body, except for the wheels and the pignose/front parking lights.

The engine variations (SOHC in 89-90, DOHC 91+) are pretty minimal. The DOHC has a little more power, but it doesn't make much of a difference in the real world.

The DOHC prefers midgrade gas, so if you're on a tight budget you might want to think about that. It'll run on regular, though, so I don't really think that's even worth considering.

If you're not on a budget, look at the newer models, too. The last body run (um, 97-98? someone correct me if I'm wrong) is probably the best-looking of the bunch (opinion), but they're kind of hard to come by.

Just pick one you like, and go with it. The only really common problems with the S13s are hosed seats and rust under the rear spoiler, if one is installed.

The engines will, like most Nissan stuff, pretty much run forever. They can get noisy timing chains eventually, as the guides wear out, but that's not a death sentence.

I've had my '90 since 1996, it has 75,000 miles on it. Aside from routine maintenance, I haven't spent a dime on the car. It needs a steering rack right now, but other than that it's holding up peachily.

ok, thanks. Do you know the difference between the SE and the LE fastback. I compared prices on blue book and they said only $7 difference. I chose no a/c and no auto which may have caused anomoly. It said leather seats only cost $34.25US. A/c=$75US. I think this had something to do with them being standard equipment or something?

It's a 'one' JN1 - Japan Nissan 1, I think the 1 is the plant number.

A/C was an option on my '89 SE and I was lucky enough to have it. The compressor, just went earlier this year and by all estimates I've gotten its far too expensive to replace, so that 75 dollars you found is very off I believe.

As for any other differences, my friend's LE has no spoiler but does have a rear windshield wiper. My SE has a spoiler and no rear wiper. After a certain point LE's came with leather and SE's did not. 34 dollars for leather seats must be off too, because when I finally found a replacement seat at a junkyard it was 50 bucks and it was CLOTH! Nissan wanted 100 for the cloth, so you'd better check your info on those numbers. All in all it is a great and dependable car. I have 126,700 on mine and it still runs without any problems other than the compressor going. It is no longer my daily driver as I bought a 4x4 new truck since its more applicable for the weather we get in RI. Despite that the car will probably run forever (well maybe not forever, the body will eventually rust out.) But the car is 15 years old and it only is starting to show rust on the bottom of the driver door sill, not too shabby. Hope you find one, you'll love it.

In fact, I do.

I have jpg images of the options charts for the 1989-1993 model years. I'll post them in my next message for you.

Here are the charts, in a zip file.

Thanks. Yep, it is a one. I entered it into a canadian gov't air care site and it gave me a list of all the times the car came in for inspection with odometer reading and list of air care results back to

1994.

I assumed so, after it didn't show up right away. No problem.

I'll toss it into alt.binaries.test in a moment, same subject line.
