Derbyshire Laning

Big thanks to Paul for sorting a route out.

Best lanes ive ever ever ever done :)

Nige managed to get his OSF wheel about 5 foot in the air, and we'd only been going for 10 mins!

Wicked day out, absolutely bolloxed now. Left at 8.30, got back at 5.30, and did just shy of 300 miles and didnt really stop much all day! 90 did not miss a beat.

Well worth it - Thanks Nige and Paul

Stange Edge in the summer then :)

It was ace & the P38 is so much better off road than you can imagine. There is a frig you do to put it into extra height mode too.

Get some AT tyres on it now & away I go, better get the bearing sorted quick, mind you.

Cheers boys, Girls & all.

The one great thing about the P38, it's as comfy as a Rolls Royce, so no tiredness ;))

Heheheh, yeah. Must be one of the best days laning I've had in a while, certainly a bit of everything from rocks to sand to mud and ruts, most excellent.

Thanks to Andy for the routes he had, Roych Clough is just brilliant and a _MUST DO_ lane for anyone in the area.

Some pics here ..

Been home since 5, stopped at a McDonalds for the kids and absolutely nackered, hence had a cuppa and a sandwich after getting in. ;)

Damn right for Stanage. We didn't attempt it today in deference to Nige's RR and the general slippery/dangerous conditions. Had to be me that got stuck again .. but getting rid of the ballast meant it popped out easy enough ... ;)

Cheers Nige and Mark, a great day out.

It will be shod in proper rubber next time, aslo wanted to see how it faired on some 'less serious' stuff. I thought it performed bloody great. That extra height is just great. I'll get some diff guards, as they are the same as a D2 i believe.

When i went into that dip after the fist mile or so, I thought it was gonna fall forward, I was actually ready to bail, but eating a sarnie at the time ;)

Bloody surprising how well it did, I thought. Very nice motor.

The gearbox is superb. TC only came on three times the whole day ;)

Always wanted to take one off road properly, now for some decent AT tyres.

Another thing, what do i need to get that memory map malarkey sorted? I need one.

I reckon we need to start a laning club, that meets every month or so?

I believe the undercarriage of the D2 and P38 are pretty much identical, so what fits one should fit the other. Still seems odd with the diffs on the "wrong" side though.

When I was looking, the only AT tyres that would fit the P38 HSE were Grabber AT2s (came out days after I had fitted a new set of Wranglers). Maybe the other manufacturers have caught up by now.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a shorter wheelbase on the D2, surely? It was bloody good fun today. There were a lot of laners around today, all in jazzed up Defenders & even mega tyred Jeeps. A road going P38 did the same as them ;)

Get a PDA, the rest can be sorted when we next meet ... ;)

Good idea, I'm up for it.

For anyone interested I've also put some screendumps of the routes I proposed and the actual routes taken today. If anyone wants the 'real' overlays I'll happily pass them on as it'll certainly save some grief ... ;)

Had to split themup as East and West as my screen is so small ... ;) I'd also be interested if anyone has any other overlays of green lanes, play areas etc that they wouldn't mind passing on to me so I can keep a 'central store' for AFL Unofficial (and Official maybe) meets.

If anyone has any overlays/data/lat-longs/addresses etc please email them to me at this reply email address. It is mine, it does work, but let me know you've sent me something, I really never check it otherwise.

What spec PDA do i need? Do i need GPS to run it etc?

Yeah. There's loads these days with built-in GPS antenna, like mine (Mitac Mio 168) but mine's mega-old and is crap really, that's why I missed the turning at the bottom of Pinfold ... GPS lagged, due to trees and valley bottom. Newer chipsets (Sirfstar III are 'best') work far better with better battery life.

Or you could get one with Bluetooth and add a GPS antenna, cheap enough on ebay etc but I've only ever used the all-in-one thing. ;)

I'll have a look later and see what's currently 'good' and post back.

Have a look yourself actually,

I have an HP iPAQ HX2790 and the Sirfstar III Bluetooth TomTom GPS Rx. TomTom is TomTom but I have Navio (free from a software offer that came with the PDA) for doing "proper" waypoint location stuff. This gives bearing and distance etc as well as plotting your position on a scanned in map (once you've told it at least two reference points.

The GPS Rx still doesn't like tree cover, as in being in a wood, very sluggish compared to being in the clear when it can get put you within a

10' radius of a given set of co-ordinates.

The diary and contacts stuff in the PDA don't hold a candle to my old Psions. It occasionally gets it's knickers in a twist and the WiFi won't connect or an application will lock up. But hey this is Windows so we can't expect anything other than that, both the poor applications, poor OS and no indications/logs as to why its fupped up again.

About the third in with Nige about to crest a bank is quite impressive.

Don't you just hate it when your camera decides that the rain drops and heated screen wires are the subject of intrest. B-)

The Asus Eee laptop computer might be worth a look: right now, it's too new for good out-of-the box support for things like SatNav, but it's Linux so there are probably some solutions. More for the user who needs mobile typing, I reckon.

.. we didn't need the ropes after all ... just off-loadedthe ballast (Wife and kids) and the Disco came out easily. Could havegone forwards, but there were more heavily rutted sections further on...

Good news is, swmbo says she's now seriously thinking of getting a Mondeo so we can tow the caravan with that, lose the towbar on the disco _and_ get a proper lift kit!!!!!

She thinks that might stop me getting stuck ... ;)
