disco swivel seal replacement

Jul 30, 2005 3 Replies

another item on the to do list is one of the swivels is weeping grease. the previous owner had both swivels filled with one shot grease but one side is leaking slightly, he just topped it up every service but I would like to repair it properly. looking at the swivel kits the most expensive bit is the ball. is there a way to determine if its just the seal that needs replacing rather than the whole lot or is it only possible to check the ball after its been stripped down?

That's an easy one! If the surface of the ball is pitted/corroded the seal will be damaged and will leak. If the ball surface is in good conditiion then you will probably find play in either the top or bottom swivel pins. Re-shimming may solve the problem, but one or more of the bearings could be on the way out, or even knackered.

The ball surface looks in very good condition, however if the bearings are shot then i take it that the whole lot needs changing

No! Just the bearing - but you do have to take it all to bits........
