Disco V8 Engine Oil?

Hi, I've just recently bought a 97 V8 Disco.

What type/quality of engine oil is recommended. The windscreen sticker for the last oil change says Pennzoil but no type is given. I called the garage who did it and they assure me it is mineral oil.

Is something like Castrol GTX good enough for top ups and the next change or should I be looking more upmarket?? I see Castrol Protek and Magnatek on the shelves, are they worth the extra money? I'm pretty new to all this so please bear with me!!

If my experience is anything to go by you will be topping it up frequently, so get a decent quality 10W40 and you will be fine. No need for fancy brands and so on - the brand is not important. The RAVE CD states that 10W/40 is fine from -20 to +50C, which should cover New Zealand OK.

Change it at least every 6 thousand miles, ideally every 4 thousand and keep it well topped up. For added convenience you need 6.1 litres for an oil change which from two 1-gallon tins leaves 3-4 litres for topping up between changes ;-)

API SG or better, for the anti-sludging.

if it's done lots of miles and seems like a worn engine, you could use 15W50 instead, especially in hot weather, apart from that, what Tim said.
