Austin> On or around Fri, 04 Jan 2008 11:23:42 +0000 (GMT), "Dave Austin> Plowman (News)" enlightened us Austin> thusly: >> Bit like saying there are no chavs, only chav parents.
Well, it's partly true there too based on my observations.
Austin> aye that was on the news: x% of children from a low income Austin> family are underachievers in school.
Well it works one of two ways. You either get the "well my Dad does alright from the social, so why should I work hard to get a job?" mentality. Or you get what happened to me ...
Austin> I reckon (as one who lived on the breadline when we were Austin> young, and have a university degree) that it's the other Austin> way about.
.. and Austin who think "I'm buggered if I'm living in poverty all my life, get me out of here".
Austin> The sort of chavs who don't make their chavlings go to Austin> school, don't care whether the chavlings are doing any Austin> good, 'cos school's a waste of good dole-sitting time, are Austin> the more likely to be low income families.
There's exceptions to every rule - but generally I think that the chav/welfare society is self-perpetuating. I don't think it's entirely low income, either. There's something else that's part of that particular mindset - the "whoever's hardest is right, and f**k everyone else" mentality - that makes me really worried about the future.
