OT: What happened next

On or around Fri, 04 Jan 2008 11:23:42 +0000 (GMT), "Dave Plowman (News)" enlightened us thusly:

aye that was on the news: x% of children from a low income family are underachievers in school.

I reckon (as one who lived on the breadline when we were young, and have a university degree) that it's the other way about. The sort of chavs who don't make their chavlings go to school, don't care whether the chavlings are doing any good, 'cos school's a waste of good dole-sitting time, are the more likely to be low income families.

You don't need to report accidents involving cats.

Is that still the case? I thought dog licenses were revoked at the same time as cat licenses and eric the half-a-bee licenses.

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable).

You should consider what a dog has been bred for and decide whether they are good characteristics for a pet.

Well, it's partly true there too based on my observations.

Well it works one of two ways. You either get the "well my Dad does alright from the social, so why should I work hard to get a job?" mentality. Or you get what happened to me ...

Austin> I reckon (as one who lived on the breadline when we were Austin> young, and have a university degree) that it's the other Austin> way about.

.. and Austin who think "I'm buggered if I'm living in poverty all my life, get me out of here".

There's exceptions to every rule - but generally I think that the chav/welfare society is self-perpetuating. I don't think it's entirely low income, either. There's something else that's part of that particular mindset - the "whoever's hardest is right, and f**k everyone else" mentality - that makes me really worried about the future.

Indeed. The guy who used to run one of the clubs for this breed - his car number was K9 SBT - lived across the road and bred them, and the bitch he used was very bad tempered indeed. It was a few years ago before the breed became popular with a certain type, but with hindsight I know now why.

Sounds about right for when we were at school (poorest kid in my year at school is now a chemistry professor at a US university) but times have changed now. All the poor have become chavs (or all the poor non-chavs have improved themselves so they ain't poor no more), so from what I see if a kid is from a poor family his future is fecked.

Road Traffic Act 1988, Section 170 requires any accident involving injury to any animal to be reported to the police within 24hours if you are unable/unwilling to give your details to the animals owner/handler at the time of the accident.

.. and further qualified by the statements:

'other than an animal in or on that motor vehicle or a trailer drawn by that motor vehicle' (i.e. the vehicle being driven by the person required to do the reporting)

'in this section "animal" means horse, cattle, ass, mule, sheep, pig, goat or dog.'

49.9% of children from *all* backgrounds are below average achievers in school. But then it cant be so bad, because another 49.9% are *above* average, too! You can make a statistic say anythin' you want...

Yeah, as I said some weeks ago, I have more legs than the average man!

Yes, but you can't make the statistics say that 0.2% of a population are always on the average either....Its perfectly possible that no-one is on the average at all of course.

IF the distribution is Gaussian THEN half the population will be above or below the mean, but you don't know what the distribution of backgrounds is, nor do you know that the distribution is Gaussian anyway....

do you have to report running over a dog with no collar?

Reply to

Unless the average is median, in which case its *compulsory* to have at least someone exactly at the average mark!

I thought that only applied to mode? What's the median of 3,3,2?
