Range Rover 3.5 EFI - wierd noise in dashboard

Thanks for the reply Andy, but I'vce checked the speedo housing (it fell off when I was on a logging road) and that ain't it ...really does sound like a relay or a vacuum valve as it only starts when the engine is on load - like going up hill or when foot is put to the floor ...

How did you check it?

I have the same noise on mine and it eminates from the bevel gear in the speedo housing. It gets tight through lack of lubrication and causes the noise. Try removing the speedo cable from the gearbox end and see if the noise goes away.

Ok, point taken.

I'll check again tomorrow ...although the sound seems to be coming from just below the steering wheel and near the switch block (cruise, interior light etc) .. this is a left hand drive so the sound is on the left side of the dash -

If I back off on the throttle, the sound goes away (same road speed) - Is there a vacuum line under there maybe with something to do with the cruise control?(which doesn't work btw)

We haven't got cruise control but the noise is from just below the steering wheel, and is definately speed related.

I'm going to go and drive it now, just to see if its when you accelerate that its doing it. I ususally drive the Discovery, so its not something I'd notice too much. It annoys Bruce though!
