Strange vibrations

Hi folks,

hoping someone could give me a couple of pointers. I recently did a suspension lift, nothing daft - only about 1.5" lift all round and new procomp shocks. I knew the front prop UJ`s were a bit loose when i did the lift. It didn`t cause any nasty vibrations or anything so I left them alone. Everything drove fine post-lift and all felt tight and nice. After about a month I had the UJ`s rebuilt by a landie specialist as they started to vibrate slightly on over run. The day after refitting the refurb`d prop the front diff oil seal decided to let go. Fine, not too much of a problem. It had probably worn due to the vibrations of the old prop and its a coincidence. But since then i`m getting some other strange vibrations. At low revs (about 900-1100rpm) I get a sort of "jiggle" for perhaps a second or 2 when taking drive up and i`m still getting vibrations on overun. The thing just doesn`t seem to "feel" right anymore. Plus when I changed the front diff seal i noticed the oil in the diff was full of bubbles! (diff breather is fine by the way) should there be bubbles in the diff oil and why am I still getting vibrations even though the UJ`s are brand new? I suppose I`m just spoilt by the fact this landie until now has never rattled, squeaked or vibrated and I want to keep it this way!!!

Cheers for any pointers,

It could be that you are just more sensitive to vibration because you expect it to be better than it is. However, there is one possibility you should check. The Landrover 90/110 does not have a CV joint in the front prop shaft, despite the fact that the angle on the two u-joints is not the same. They avoided the need for this by setting the two u-joints at an angle to each other, i.e. with the yokes not in the same plane. The "landie specialist" should know about this, and there should be marks on the splined joint in the shaft - but mistakes have been made! Incidentally, the lift will reduce the effectiveness of this subterfuge in design. JD

took the front prop off and still same problem - so i investigated further... and i think i`ve found the problem, the sliding joint on the rear prop has some play in it (anyone got a good rear prop for a `95 300tdi defender 90 going cheap?) and the gearbox mounts have gone quite soft allowing the box to move depending if the powers on or off (which in my thoughts would put the rear uj`s out of alignment? or am i way off the mark?).

so new box mounts this weekend and hopefully find a decent rear prop soon.
