TD5 - 90 low on top speed

Hiya, have a 1999 TD5 90 covered just under 60k full LR service history, BUT it will not go more than 60MPH indicated on Speedo (showing about 65 on a GPS unit) does any one have any ideas as to what may be wrong. sorry to sound quite vague but am quite new to landies.

Are you driving it in low box?

make a great comper if he was and probably break the sound barrier if he changed up into high 65 mph in low box does seem a bit odd unless he has very big tyres that are slowing him down through lack of power to drive them handbrake on slightly or another brake binding the thing should be a lot quicker unless he's pulling a big trailer or our leg's regards geoff

Don't quite know how my message got posted twice so I will apologise first for that.

My tyres are 265/75 16 - will that make a difference ?

I'm running that size on my 110 - can hit 60 easily with room for more where I can.

Possibly more rolling resistance, certainly wind resistance, and a greater mass to get off the mark.

But it's not holding mine back, so you'll have to look elsewhere I think.

I have the same size tyres (BFG Long Trial) on my 200tdi 90 and after sorting out the speedo calibration it will do 100 on the motorway (with a little help from a disco transfer box and a bit of injection pump tweaking). How long has the top speed been 60ish?

Since I bought it a few months ago. thought it was quite normal till I got blasted away by one on the M62. it will JUST hit 70 if I really floor it but sounds like it is revving the nuts off, PLUS it gets a bit rough and lumpy at that speed? How do you sort Speedo calibration out?

There is a spedometer output drive gear off the transfer box driving the speedo cable on all pre TD5 Defenders, it was simply a matter of swapping this gear for a LWB version which is matched to 750 tyres (almost same dia as 265x75). I think on the TD5 there is an oscillator coupled to the transfer box where the speedo cable output used to be, this relays a signal to the ECU which relays the speed to the speedo. I imagine recalibration may have to be done by altering a setting on the ECU by a dealer, another possibility, since the gear that drives the oscillator is almost identical to a mechanical drive one (only with a smaller output drive key) is that there possibly a differently toothed gear that can do the same job? I have an oscillator type gear off a 300tdi Disco if that's any use, it has 23 teeth on it. Best to have a word with a dealer or specialist garage while you are getting the engine checked out. Hope this helps, Fergus

Thanks Fergus. I will check it out with my local LR dealer. he should know hopefully, but I am not too optimistic. Took them three days to find an electric window fault on my 2003 Td6 Rangie.........
