Building a new headlamp loom

I want to build a relay switched headlamp loom for my MK2 Golf, which has famously crap lights. Broadly speaking, I'll be following the guide here:

I've got a couple of questions

1) Most headlamp looms for the Golf do away with the dim dip system. This seems to consist of a resistor about the size of a pack of polos on each chassis leg. Is there a way to retain this, other than keeping the factory relays in the fusebox and running new heavy cables throughout?

2) Can I just shove relays where I like in the engine bay on relay sockets, or do I need to use a weatherproof box ? I suppose the fact that weatherproof boxes exist suggests that they're a good idea.

Yes, just use the old feed to the resistor to operate a relay feeding th= e =

resistor.

Depends how wet your rngine bay gets & how weatherproof a relay you =

buy,these aren't bad

I only ever saw one on my Mk2, behind the radiator grille. It was a bit bigger, so perhaps it varies.

Why retain dim-dip at all?

The old way round it, if you really want, was to fit 20W sidelight bulbs IIRC, but then aagain, why not just revert to a normal setup & use headlights?

I once fitted a realay for spots on a MK1- nice tidy Hella unit with an inbuilt fuseholder, and just mounted it on the battery holder. It was fine while I had the car. I just took a feed straight off the battery.

Why on earth would you want to?

Shove 'em somewhere they won't get directly soaked by road spray. They'll be fine.

Because they came that way! OTOH I suspect once everythings been through the resistor pack, it'll be using as much power as headlights.

Sounds handy. There are modular slot together jobs, so you can have whatever combination of relays and fuses you want.

So?

Dim-dip is useless, pointless, was only ever a UK type-approval requirement, and even then for only a few years. It's not MOTable, it's not required.

If you need to see or be seen, put dip on properly.

There will be heat lost through the resistor pack, sure, and it'll knacker the bulbs, but the total power use will be lower than the headlamps on normally since the current is lower.

This diagram only covers the dip-beam though- the mains still rely on the VW wiring.. I think I would use a second relay and a change over relay to accomplish both filaments being fed directly from the battery.

Aye. Although on most GTIs you have 2 main beams, so they're less problematic. The dips can be shocking though.
