Cambelt change cost and interval VW

Hi

Am looking to buy a s/h golf or bora diesel for daughter in law

something around 02-04 plate

what is the cambelt change interval on the 1.9tdi 130

What would be approx fair price for this job at a local independant not main dealer

Initial google suggested about 250gbp but info was a couple of years old at least

Cheers

Autdata gives 80,000 miles for the '02 MY 1.9tdi, and 3.3 hours labour.

For the 1.9PD, it depends on the engine code. It can be either 60,000 or

80,000 miles. In all cases, the labour time is 2.9 hours.

VW UK advise changing the belt at 4 yearly intervals if those mileages are not reached.

Cost will depend on where you are in the country, and whether you are going to use a dealer or an independent. Here in the south-east, VW dealers charge at least 90UKP/hr, so labour will be around 300UKP plus parts.

250UKP all in might be closer to what an independent would charge.

I'd tend towards the 60k interval rather than 80k regardless of engine code, and stick with 4 years or so- maybe 5 at a push. It may be worth changing the water pump at the same time: my local independent charged around £300 IIRC.

FWIW, at a NW London Skoda dealer for my 1.9 tdi Octavia, The bill for Belt kit & water pump parts, labour and VAT came to £460.

An A3 and Golf of a given year and engine size will cost the same more or less- they are mechanically nearly identical.

This is Angus the ignorant speaking, but isn't it worth getting the "other belts" and water pump done at the same time? Fairly cheap, and the VW plastic impeller blades break off and can cause catastrophic damage if memory serves.

As I say, I can barely tell a spanner from a screw driver but I'm working on it. :)

You're absolutely right. Even if the pump doesn't have plastic blades (not all do), it's not terribly expensive, and a failure could throw the timing belt.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Chris Bartram saying something like:

Dong ding. The PO of my SOJC had done the cambelt on the cheap and replaced the belt only. Just as well I had it done (on a time, not mileage basis), as the w/pump and tensioner bearings were nearly shot.
