Clio immobiliser

Hi all,

My son bought a Renault Clio 1.2 some weeks back, assuming he would pass his test first time. He didn't, nor the second, and the Clio sits there looking unloved. I try to give it a short run every week or so, but I'm a bit confused about the immobiliser system. We can unlock the car with the remote on the key and then if you start up straight away, no problem, But the remote is sometimes a bit iffy, and I wanted to have the old fashioned way as a backup.

The thing is, without using the remote we don't seem to be able to start it. My son thought that the door lock/unlock control which is in the middle of the console just in front of the gear stick enabled this somehow, but we can't get it to work. Next to this control (associated with it in fact) is a flashing red light which the remote turns out, and we assume means the immobiliser is in operation.

He didn't get a handbook, and doesn't recall being told what the method is, can anybody help?

Thanks and a happy new year to you all. :)

Angus.

the immobiliser being operated by the remote is an essential. it will re-arm itself after a short while. live with it or buy something else.

My mum's car has a very similar system. The options are a) live with it or b) pull it out. TBH pulling an alarm out isn't something I'd want to tackle lightly - I'm postponing doing it to mine until I do an engine swap and need to rewire it all anyway.

Thanks. What confuses me though is what use is the spare key which has no disarming function? :-/

There is a manual disarm procedure which involves turning of ignition, pressing of accelorator and of unlock rocker switch to enter a 4 digit code , which was supplied with the car new on a tag with the handbook in a particular order, but I can't remmeber for the life of me the exact procedure.

It could be what Tim said, or the previous owner lost the spare alarm remote.
