That's not dismantle & refurbish though, that's shred & melt. You can already do that to most of a car.

However I only guessed that imv it 'shouldn't' be a problem to design a car which could very easily and quickly be completely refurbished or recycled when it came to the end of its useful life. Something Merc appear to be well ahead of the game on.

"Recycling fraction increased by 156 per cent on the A-Class meaning that the number of components made from recyclable materials was very high, for example, plastic surplus from the dashboard can be used in the front wheel arch lining. A total of 85 per cent of A-Class's components can be recycled while 95 per cent can be recovered."

You will find that best mpg is achieved by keeping the revs somewhere in the

3-4000rpm zone. A higher gear / less revs does not always equal better mpg.

Erm... what is the best rev band for mpg in a 1.6 Focus?

It's not a problem. I can stick the fuel injection, engine management=20 and CAT off a Granada on it if needs be or if I'm feeling really=20 extravagant, pop a Zetec in it.

If they could, I think they would. Going back and rectifying problems post delivery or part way through production is very expensive, so I expect assembly and dissambbly is designed to be as simple as possible whilst still retaining characteristics that will sell the car - ie, quiet, and decent packaging.

The moment I got in the car last night I just realised how high 3-4k actually is! 30mph in 4th is about 1,750rpm, in 5th it's slightly below

1,500. I think I needed to be in 2nd to get above 3k at 30mph. 70mph+ is around 4k in 5th.

Judging by that, I can't see me changing my driving style, except for maybe not using 5th at 30mph as much.

We've just got rid of our 1.6 Focus which we owned from new since 1999. Best mpg was obtained below 3k in 5th on open roads. I once managed over

50mpg in it, 4 up with a roof box. That was during a petrol strike in France when we had to make the tank contents last until we reached the ferry port.
