Exhaust repairs

A few weeks at the most. Exhaust bandages and that paste is rubbish. There are plenty of garages open today and most will be open boxing day and onwards.

So about 6 months?

Not that are likely to have a Rover 825 silencer box in stock, unfortunately. I tried Watling Tyres but they either weren't open today or closed at mid-day. My own garage, which might have been able to braze up the box weren't open today either. I won't touch Kwik-Fit with a barge pole.

If it lasts over the next couple of days that will be ol although I've had a search on motoring forums and some folk have reported the repair lasting for two years.

Until the first bug bump. If the weld is failing at the silencer, the flexing will be sufficient to make sure it all falls to bits.

Personally, I'd not drive it apart from to the nearest exhaust centre. The chances of the pipe coming completely off the silencer and digging into the ground before being twisted up and ramming into the floorpan are too high.

No, I had a good tug at it and its not loose. I don't like bodged repairs (although I mended my motorbike exhaust with a baked bean can and that lasted forever) but Sos's Law dictates that it should happen on Christmas Eve.

I'll see what happens when I start the car tomorrow.

Fingers crossed then. I guess it's not cracked round enough to be that bad. Just don't do what my missus did and ignore it.

Already found the part on the internet, about £50 so I'll see how much Watling Tyres or my garage want otherwise I might do it myself.

What a git of a thing to happen at such a time, sods law that soon as every has shut up shop you need something then rest of the year no problems whatsoever. *shakes head*

I hope the temp fix holds. My brother in law had a similar problem and he used some of that plumbers plasticines type thing which worked for a long time about 8 months of I re-call then he had it properly fixed and they laughed a big about his bodge but was suprised how long it lasted. you can get it at plumbase and robert dyas etc. Its normally used to stop leaks on radiators or some such.

Ah, tell me about it. Having said that, on my way back from Halfords with the crap I had a cop car following me and he didn't pull me so it isn't too noisy- it's still at the stage where only the owner would notice it.

In my experience of 46 years motoring, your bodge repair will last approximately five minutes. I've been there and got the tee-shirt. It's a complete waste of time trying to repair an exhaust unless you weld it.

Rubbish. How long a temporary repair lasts, is down to where it's blowing. If it's where a pipe joins one of the boxes it probably wont last very long, but if it's a hole in an otherwise fairly solid pipe, it can last for several weeks, possibly months.

I used Belzona E Metal to repair an exhaust once and it lasted ages.

Yes, in fact I went to the garage on thursday and the parts they ordered won't be here until next wednesday anyway. I doubt anyone would stock parts for a Rover Sterling.

The exhaust repair lasted two days before starting to blow again but that's all I needed anyway- Christmas Day and Boxing day with a car.
