Hub nuts.

Anything special about them?

I'm about to fit new brake shoes and I need to remove the hub nut to get the drums off.

The nut is staked and the Haynes book says renew the nut and dust cap. I can see in the past this hasn't happened judging by the state of them so they are potentially the original ones (car is a '98). The nut once torqued up, needs staking into a recess on the thread.

On ebay the ones for my car (three stud wheels) are nearly twice the price of virtually every other Peugeot model. See

Are they so specialised I can't find them anywhere else? I can't see why not. The thread is M20, the outside diameter 32mm and they oviously need staking.

Would a plain nut and loctite do? I will buy the proper fitment ones if I have to, it just seems like I'm being taken for a ride over the price.

It seems the nuts are only available over the counter if you buy a bearing kit. I'm not about to do that!

Thanks Mark.

Nuts suitable for staking are specialised and are therefore more expensive than a plain nut. at the price of the ebay ones it is really not worth quibbling about. there is no way that I would trust loctite on a nut as critical as that under those conditions.

No.

£7 for a pair? "Taken for a ride"? Hardly...

Don't say that until you've got the drum off. They've got a reputation for the bearing inner being a bit stuck to the stub axle, and it all coming off in bits.

Oh, and fwiw - I had a bit off that particular eBay seller a little while ago. Turned out to be the wrong one - not their fault - they sent what I'd ordered, but what I'd ordered wasn't what I needed. Not a problem at all - they sourced the right bit, and exchanged the wrong one with no quibble. Kept me informed by phone of what was happening, too. Excellent service.

Whats more, you most likely will not get Loctite to work as there is so much grease there on the threads. Loctite needs to be particularly clean for it to work even using an activator.
