I take the point but surely it's a given that they should take care of it and he wasn't doing so.

This thread doesn't do much to improve my perception of the kind of people who fit dash cams.

They only ever seem to fit them so they can find something to complain about.

Great idea, blame the victims! It's worked well for rapists.

Not had any accidents where you got unfairly blamed due to blatant lies from the other party that you couldn't disprove then I take it!

Why do those with dash cams attract accidents?

I drive anywhere between 30 and 50k business miles a year and can't remember the last time I even got close to having an accident. (Aside from a clumsy incident in a very tight underground car park in Berlin... no other vehicle involved)

Looking at the dashcam footage uploaded to video sharing sites, almost inevitably, the owner of the cam is driving in a way which attracts accidents.

Not sure that they do attract. The aforementioned circumstance happened to me when I was 17 (way before dash cams existed!) and as a young driver was advised I wouldn't have much credibility in court so should settle which of course hit me hard on insurance costs for a while. I have one now to hopefully avoid a repeat of that. Nothing since then except for being hit while stationary a couple of times at low speed.

I'd be very wary concluding things like that.

It's been my impression that generally accidents happen when someone does something stupid or makes a big mistake in the vicinity of someone who relies too much on no mistakes being made by others. If the dash cam user is the one who makes the big mistake you're unlikely to see it uploaded :) If the other way round then you will and the footage will give you said impression.

One could say from the footage that in general people who don't have dash cams tend to make stupid mistakes!

BTW - strange how whenever dashcam video's introduced to "prove" somebody's innocence, it usually shows them driving like an oblivious twonk.

Well eh some of the bike cam looks a bit like that. But I'm a cyclist myself, but not one of those...

I'm just about thinking of getting a car cam since a van driver deliberately tried to force me off the motorway, just unbelievable like something you see in a gangster movie. I just managed to swerve into the hard shoulder to avoid him. The van driver tailgated me close up and got annoyed because I hesitated too long, so he took out 'revenge'. But I know that I will never convince anybody without the fottage.

But why did you leave the cam running without telling the garage? I would imagine that had told the garage in advance, then this abuse wouldn't have happened. On the other hand, you wouldn't have had the 'interesting' fottage to show your friends.

So perhaps it's a good thing to have if it makes you drive more respectful. In case of an accident, the fottage will inevitably be shown from sometime before the accident. I know it would change my driving.

A case in point, although it is a stupid bicycle rider, two counts of stupid, one showing lack of law knowledge and one count of posting footage proving it.

These cameras automatically run whenever the car is started.

Um, why should you have to tell the garage?

It would have been "left running" as you say because that is their default mode of operation. Ignition on, camera on.
