MOT and windscreen satnav holder

indeed, i had my ear chewed off by a customer as i removed one of those sticky parking tickets you get from the machines from her windscreen that was in the way, you just cant help some people, nowt strange as folk ! but the thing is she was in the right, i have no power before or after the test to do anything without her consent.

My reply was to being asked as why a main garage made any difference. The tester was 100%. He even fitted the car in during his dinner break.

I'm not saying it isn't, and I've benefited from such in the past. It's also possible that if the garage did a check and/or service before the MOT test, the fitter doing the work may have removed it in answer to an implied instruction to do whatever was necessary to get a pass. What I'm implying is that officially the tester has to test the vehicle *as presented*, whether by the owner or their agent.

That is a good point. Being a main dealer there might well have been a 'pre-tester' who looks around to see if anything is amiss?

I don't personally use a main dealer, as my vehicle is a 40 year old Land Rover. I just drop it off on Monday, and say "I'll see you in a few days. Get me an MOT on it, would you." If that's what the OP did, then I'd expect stuff to be done on that basis.

Then I get the bill, which is another scary story....

why not just take it off and replace it after the MOT

because effectively that is working on the car (not allowed strictly speaking)

as petty as it seems we must test a car as presented, even if it comes in with a stop light out & we knew about it we'd still fail it, but we'd do a PRS which is where we are allowed to repair the item within approx 1 hour while still having the vehicle logged into the mot computer, repair is then done a failure & a pass is then issued at the same time.

so for example after the full test has been done, id remove the sat nav holder, fail it for being in the drivers view and then issue a pass, might seem long winded to some but thats how VOSA wants us to do it.

the reason why we have to fail any item that might seem insignificant to the general public is apart from road safety is VOSA collates all the data on what vehicles are failing on out there.

I only query, because I've never had a problem with my gooseneck mount in exactly the same position as the OP. I would imagine it is because it is a gooseneck mount, the sucky is under 40mm, and sticks out from the windscreen in such a way as to not be that obtrusive.

I'verhad one for, ooh, what, 4 years, always passed MOT.

I am sure you are right but no failure was issued. Notes were made on the other sheet that comes with the MOT though (too lazy to go downstairs and get it's number)so this cannot be something that was done as a wink-nod favour but as an offically explainable proceedure.

Me, I 'mount' [1] mine on the front passenger seat and like you, I only use the "voice feature to guide me" - and woe-betide my left ear if I don't listen to her instructions - mind you she has worn out a few road atlases over the last forty years *and* I've got used to the continual 'nagging' now of "turn left at the next junction" or "don't go down that road you silly old bugger it'll take you miles out of our way" - and if I don't listen. I usually get a dig in the ribs for my trouble - beats these modern-day 'satnags' anytime for accuracy and quick calculations to get around traffic jams.

And Im still bloody married to her! ROTFL
