I think the Michelin Tweel is the way of the future, pneumatic tyres are going to be a thing of the past.

It'll take while yet though...

I think runflats using that technology inside an inflated tyre may well happen first.

That is basically what a runflat is, a super stiff tyre that is self supporting,. The problem is as a driver you don't know it is punctured until it fails completely or a pressure sensor tells you. The Tweel does not rely on pressure so it is totally unaffected by punctures, if you put a Tweel inside a pressure casing then the casing would still fail with out pressure.

I know that, but the Tweel still has major issues in terms of handling, especially at speed. Current runflats have weight issues because the runflat support is basically deadweight until the tyre is flat.

By combining the two you get the support of the Tweel structure while inflated which allows thinner sidewalls, lower pressures etc but you also get the pneumatic support while inflated which means the Tweel spines can be more supple and handle better.
