OT 2 stroke mower engine

My mower runs OK for about 10 minutes after the choke has been placed in the Normal position but then it seems after it gets really warmed up, it starts hunting, fast then slow. Might a hole in the silencer cause it or has anyone any suggestions what I might look for ? I've had the head and carb end off and the only obvious minor problem with the main parts is some play at the main bearing but a dealer told me some time ago, that most have that and it's not worth doing anything about it.

My best guess would be that the main bearing seal is letting in air.

and if you can get anywhere near the seal, a spray of anything flammable near it while it is running will confirm the diagnosis. richening it up may improve it a bit

Thanks for the suggestions. As I've rebuilt everything else, I think you're probably right. Time to ditch the unhealthy beast and return to electric me thinks.
