Scenic overheating intermittently

Only does it occasionally. Temparature will go right up... If you put the heaters on for about 30 secs it goes straight back to normal and is OK then. Only happens every day or two like this.

Someone mentioned it may be air bubble in the water system?

Just had the cylinder head rebuilt following a timing belt snap so I'm going to contact the garage shortly, but was just wondering if anyeone has any ideas ?

get a head gasket leak test done, once might be an air lock, but not lots of times.

Ahhh. Well the garage rebuilt the engine so took the cylinder head off and replaced all the gaskets.

Would a leak cause this intermittent overheating though?

How hard is it to do a head gasket leak test?

yes, it would cause your symptoms.

if the head has been off then it is quite easy to get a leak on reassembly.

A leak test takes only a few minutes, using either fluid that changes colour in the presence of combustion in the air above the coolant or even an exhaust gas sniffer can be used above the coolant.

OK. Guess its time to phone the garage then...

Surprised they didnt test it anyway though. They're a engine/gearbox specialist...

If it is leaking I guess its take the head off and renew the seals again, is it?

it is: take apart and establish why it leaked, fix and rebuild properly.

Bollox - can't afford to be without the car for days again. It took them nearly two weeks the first time around.

This is really weird. Car just overheated so I pulled over and popped the bonnet.

Checked the inside of the oil filler - no residue. Engine wasn't really hot at all just warm (I'd only been driving 5 mins) - I was expecting it to be baking hot ! Checked radiator fill bottle - water was only luke warm...

Weird. Could it be a thermostat or something playing up?

Could be a sticky thermostat yes.

Only thing is temp gauge was showing hot and fan was running. I've heard that these are independently controlled by two different sources ?
