Unleaded petrol mixed with Diesel in a Chrysler 2.5CRD

Yeah - us yanks have a sloppy habit of sometimes calling any fuel tank (diesel, gasoline, or other) a gas tank, when in most other contexts having to do with vehicles, the term "gas" is short for "gasoline" (petrol) and would not be used when speciifally referring to diesel (although that happens occassionally too) - just habit in a gasoline-centric culture.

It is refreshing to read the Brit conversations - I think I needed a translator for some of the posts. Yous guys have made a mess of the English language. :)

Being a "redneck" isn't regional. Jersey-ites can be just as redneck as anyone else.... and in fact a lot of 'em are really good at it.

My only recollection of a Peugeot diesel was back in the early 1970's when Peugeot tried to introduce their deisel cars to the U.S. A guy I was stationed with ended up getting a full refund on the vehicle after they could not solve some serious problems with the engine (design issues, or the U.S. dealer mechanics not knowing how to work on diesels?

- however Mercedes didn't have that problem with their diesels in the U.S. that I know of). Peugeot's effort was a disaster - they bought lots of them back and abandoned the effort before the second MY IIRC (or possibly midway in to the 2nd year).

Huw, you're sharp enough to know that as an engineer myself, I was talking about REASONABLE contingencies! Mixing fuels inadvertently (or even unbeknownst to the driver) is a REASONABLE contingency.

What's "modern" about a truck pulling up to a station and connecting hoses? The method hasn't changed in 2 generations. Maybe it SHOULD, but it hasn't yet.

I see you haven't been brainwashed by liberals. :) In liberal circles, "redneck" implies southern, and ignorant people don't exist above the Mason Dixon line.

I figure its just European envy again. ;-)

Actually I don't even own one of the darn things, but I think they're a very intersting and successful car in the same way the MINI is an interesting and successful car (I guess I could rub it in that the MINI is powered by a Chrysler-designed engine...). They're certainly not for everyone, and that's fine. If you want my vote for the ugliest waste of sheetmetal and plastic to curse the highways in recent years, I'd vote for the Honda Element or the Scion XB, both of which narrowly displaced the Aztek and Avalanche for bottom dishonors in my book. But those fugly boxes have their own loyal following as well. To each his own!

I'll bet there are a lot of folks that would love an update in a year, then 2 and 3 to see how long that pump lasts....

Someone being in "liberal circles" implies that they're made of brick from the neck up anyway, so what do I care what they think? :-)

I get great amusement from how liberalism claims to be the enlightened, unbiased, non-jugemental, "tolerant" political philosophy, yet begins immediately pigeonholing everyone according to the most insulting stereotypes imagineable. "From the south? Inbred, toothless, uneducated deluded fools." "From Texas? Shoot-first-ask-later cowboy menality." "From the midwest? Poor deluded unenlightened red-stater." And God forbid you be a conservative and an ethnic minority, because well, "you just CAN'T naturally believe that way! You've been bought and paid for and made a tool of the right-wing conspiracy!"

*ahem* Conservatives do that, too.

The point is that I have seen little support for the PT Cruiser from anybody. Personally I don't that much care for its appearance, though I am told it is actually quite practical. Quite a few to be seen in London. One of my acquaintances here in London claims to really like its retro looks... but he is still driving his Saab...

I agree that there are other cars that vie for the ugliness prize.

EVERYONE does it to a degree, no matter how hard we try not to. It strikes me as funny because (some) liberals are so loud about how they'd NEVER do something like that.

I don't know how long the PT has been available in Europe, but its kinda run its course over here. There was another minor flurry of interest when they brought out the turbo PT and the convertible, but nothing like the H-bomb that the first year of production set off. They sold SCADS of them. To say that it was a big success for Chrysler is an understatement. People either loved or hated them, and PLENTY loved them enough to buy one. Some Chrysler fans thought they drew too much influence from 30s Fords, but most people saw the 40's Chrysler T&C as the main source of inspiration. But there are so many now that it doesn't really engender any strong feelings when someone says they don't like them. Besides, the real PT fanatics don't hang out on r.a.m.c. anyway. They've got their own playpen somewhere on usenet.... ;-)

I'm not familiar with OK, but at least here (MD) our safety is so stringent you will probably end up paying more than $300 on the repairs your car "needs" to pass inspection to be legally registered. Yeah, it's a racket, but whaddayagonnado. Point is, any car that someone's willing to sell for $300 will probably end up scrapped, as nobody wants to take the chance of buying themselves more problems than they already had. You buy a $300 car, next thing you know it won't pass inspection and the bastard zoning inspector is giving you x amount of days to get rid of the "junk" car in your driveway that doesn't have plates on it or they're going to fine you etc. etc. etc... now you're out $300 plus $70 or whatever the inspection costs these days plus whatever you put into it trying to fix it up for inspection and then the junkman pays you $50 and hauls it away.

A similar argument could be put forward for utility companies - they`re only allowed orange flashing lights, but when all the lights go out including the telephone exchange for the police switchboard...
