Window tinting

Does anyone know if its legal to have window tints on the front windows of a car, My son has found a car he wants to buy but it has tints all round (only side not windscreen).I tried looking up information but get conflicting advise, some say its ok as long as it lets in 70% light in front side windows others just say it's against the law to have it on the front. I have told my son he can buy it but might have to take the front tints off even tho they are not dark and can easily see through them, Anyone know what the law is on this?

The short answer is yes as long as 70% of the light can get through. Your local Police should be able to give you the definitive answer. Beware though because a fair few traffic cars carry light meters for testing tinted windows.

"davman" gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

70% VLT. Which isn't much darker than factory tint.

If he gets a tug, he can expect a fine and a rectification notice (14 days to get the tint removed and the car inspected by an MOT station to confirm it). He may also have to remove the tint there and then - with whatever's to hand - before he can continue on his way.

If it's very noticable it'll be illegal on the front windows, fine on the back.

Plod love things like this on a youngsters car, it's all the reason they need for a pull and search :)

Heh, I look at tinted windowed cars and often think, the darkened glass must be a public accident avoiding safety modification of some sort ...

The occupants inside must look hideous!

That happened to a neighbour's partner, a trucker, when he was on his way to pick up the wagon at 5:30am one day. They made him peel enough off to make it look a mess, so he had to get the rest off when he got home.

Not just youngsters. They assume you're a drug dealer.

Funnily enough my daughter's Mini, which has mirrored-out rears, hasn't attracted the attention of Plod at all. But it does attract the "wrong" sort of attention from boyracers.

The law is that the windscreen must allow at least 75% light transmission, the front side windows 70%. The regulations do not apply to the other windows.
