Output shaft and transmission leak

Transfer case went bad on my 95 GSX automatic and had it replaced at a local garage. The mechanic had a hard time removing it from the shaft from the transmission. Now there is tranny fluid coming from the output seal and the shaft itself slides outwards a couple of inches. The mechanic told me that the seal was probably damaged from the transfer case. He didn't sound real sure about anything that was happening. Does this sound right?, or did the mechanic apply to much pressure when prying the t-case from the shaft and possibly dislodged something? I had no transmission leak before... Any help would be greatly appreciated....... just trying to get an opinion.... Does it sound like the mechanic might have damaged something?

I assume you are talking 4x4 here as you are saying "transfer case" Anytime you remove a driveshaft (a) it should slide out and (b) you always replace the seal When you say the "shaft moves a couple of inches" that should be the play between the two units--a dead tight fit would not be good(linear---as in from one unit to the other---the driveshaft should have around 30mm travel each way--well they do on the cosworth!!) Do not blame the mech for to much "pressure " but do blame him for trying to shortcut the job and not replacing all the seals (dang we have all done it --and it bites you on the derrier everynow and again) There again it does depend on what you where prepared to pay for---as in "x amount with all the bits" and "y amount using whats there" Been there with skint clients and tried to do a favour--and without reading too much into this i recon you required it done on a budget

Looks like you need to replace BOTH seals yourself to stop the leak

Timberwolf - Yes, he's refering to an AWD sports car. The top of the line Mitsus are all full-time AWD and turbo charged. Unfortunately, only 1 model is still made, the EVO. In the old days, they had several models. For example, if it is a Mitsu and has a VR4 designator, it means turbo charged, full-time AWD, and all wheel steering...except for the last few years of the

3000GT which lost the four wheel steering. Intersestingly, Chrysler stole half of the active aero design from the early 3000GT for the Crossfire.....the 3000GT actually had a fin and front skirt that deployed at 40+ MPH and actively adjusted the suspension.

Back on topic:

The transfer case has it's own oil and is separate from the transmission. A lot of people don't know this. There is no seal between the transmission and transfer case. The only external seal on the xfer case is at the propeller shaft (RWD drive shaft). That seal should be replaced every clutch change (it's less than 20 bucks!...why did you buy an automatic? I assume you're a chick?). It is very hard to damage that, especially on a lift and I wouldn't blame them too badly. Mitsu never has it in stock and you probably were screaming to have the car back.

There is a recall on this seal. If you haven't done it, it's a free repair. If this was the cause of your Xfer case failure, you should have looked at the recall letter and taken it in immediately. They probably would have replaced the xfer case for free.....

Thanks everyone... finally found out that it is completely normal for the shaft to slide out. I just had to make sure, 'cause the mechanic had absolutely no idea why it was doing that. So he left it on my shoulders to find out why. No chick here, Getting older and wanted the auto. Thanks again...
