GTO Gearbox help needed!

Hi, Just joined up after reading all your discussions.

Long story short, driving today about 80mph on the motorway and the car

spluttered for half a second once and carried on fine (smooth & no noise) - until I got to a junction. As I pulled away from stopping it

was obvious I was stuck in 3rd or 4th gear despite being in (D - automatic).

I stopped the car and turned it off, had a look at the gearbox, all dry, no leak I could see but faint smell.

Restarted the engine, put it into (D) and the car would not move, tried

(2, R, L) which also did nothing. Eventually I put it into (D) and used the (HOLD) option on the console and rolled home in 3rd or 4th, soon after the A/T Temp light came on - still no noise or performance problems really (smooth but did not move up and down the gears). Got home added about half lire of transmission oil, the warning lamp went out.

Left overnight and next morning all is still the same, can only move forward on 3rd or 4th using the (HOLD) function and have no reverse - no metallic noise when running or evidence of physical damage.

Could this be a Gearbox control module problem or more mechanical do you think?

Any advice on diagnosing would be gratefully received, can you help?

Only a guess, but to me it sounds like the problem is not with the g/b itself. I don't know how it's controlled, but it doesn't sound like a mechanical fault. Mike.

If an electronics problem 9 times out of 10, it will have activated the fault lamp..

Which suggests to me it's not a problem with the pump. More one of gear selection. Which AFAIK is controlled by valves in the valve chest, which in turn I asume, are controlled by an ECU, rather than mechanically as they are in a basic auto box. I think you need specialist to look at it. Maybe all it needs is a new ECU. At best it might be just a loose or broken connection. Mike.
