At first I was sceptical as to the new online databases for mot/insurance, but after getting my first new style MOT yesterday, and then going to DVLA website, it's well easy to tax your car, and no more pissing about waiting in queues with slow OAP's going on about their latest ailment to the person behind the counter, no need to hunt out all your documents etc.
This is def the way forward, and I must say I was pleased at how painless it was :)
Yup. And a side benefit is that the local DVLA office is dead at the end of the month.
What if they take the money, lose your disc in the post, and lose your application? Remember, this is a government agency, and the postal service. Chuck in the coppers and you have a "failure to display" offence even though sent off the application early, because it was lost.
They can't lose your application as its all done online, you have a copy of the receipt so nothing should go a-miss.
As you can tax your car up to 1 month before I don't think the excuse of losing it will wash anymore.

Not you losing it, them. If they have no record of you ever ordering, then they won't send you another disk until they do have record, ie you pay again.
Remember, people have sent their licenses back to the DVLA to get a photo card, and been told there is no record of them ever having sat a test, so they can't have a license until the do, or getting categories added, or removed that don't apply to the applicant, or getting someone elses photo on their photo card.
Do you reckon the tax disk people are any smarter?
Side question : How long have you worked in IT? Surely long enough to not trust a 'tech drone' to do important backups?

They are the only people technically skilled enough at our place to do it.
And when a new Linux server is installed, the standard approach was to "install everything" onto one big partition, of Redhat 7.
It has taken the development dept (us) wiping and re-installing everything as needed only with required services, IP_tables, and the latest final Fedora Core release, and petitioning the engineering manager, that the "company standard" has changed from Redhat 7 to Fedora core. they still install everything,but at least we have them partitioning, even if usually they are completly wrong.
Our backup teams in the past have, taken the daily tape out, put in the new daily tape, been unable to find the jst removed daily tape, and 4 years later it has never been found, or being rotored to change tape, signing for changing the tape, even when they were rotored by the manager to be off work.
It is better now, but I never trust there to be a backup, ever.
