Underclocking my tuning box...

Why spend twice as much for the pleasure of sitting on the M25 every morning? ;-)

The general consensus is 'Mk3 Golfs don't handle', I believe.

I know otherwise, and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. :-)

You need a bike ;-)

I'm in, sounds like a laugh if nothing else heh :-) You've all been driving longer than me, so if I lose, I'll blame that....

Until the gearbox explodes. I hear that most of the Ford mechanics can change them in their sleep now.

I had a nice VFR up until a month ago... and tbh, even if I still had it, no way would I want to do my particular commute on it, on a daily basis - whilst the knees are rather knobbly, I rather like my legs the way they are.

Sounds like a plan... which as usual will come to nothing like all mooted mods meets. ;-)

Pussy ;-)

The way is, has been, and always will be :-)

I wasn't paying for the fuel, I reckon you lose 10 mins at a fuel stop. Just worked it out - on an 800 mile run, averaging 80 mph would need 2 fuel stops at 10 mins each, and at least one hour of breaks (in ten hours driving) so

11 hrs 20 mins. Averaging 110 mph works out at 7h16 driving, 40 mins fuel stops, and an hour break is 9 hrs 56. Saving 1 hr 20.

What were you towing? that's about 8mpg...

206 is significantly smaller than the 75. 140 needs significantly more energy than 120. 75 had 24 valve short stroke V6 and was never really economical.

Hopefully after I change my car for a real one. Although giving passenger laps of anglesey in the A170 could be amusing.

To be fair, one of our salesmen used it for six weeks while I was in the US and averaged 38mpg in it...

I did mean to say "....and combined with Tim Kemp at the helm, fuel economy didn't stand a chance." :-)

Which is the one with the plastic filler cap surround?

Green jelly or red jelly?

Indeed, people erroneously believe the adverse claptrap written at the time, especially by "honest" John. Who wrote the biggest load of old bollocks I've ever read about the Explorer.

It was written off at the time because it wasn't as luxurious as a Range Rover and not as capable off-road as a Defender and it's relatively thirsty.

What was not mentioned was that it's about as reliable as a Toyota, it was as cheap to buy as a decent sized estate car, it can cruise all day on the motorway at 85 with the engine not much more than at tickover and it can tow the same loads as a Rangie, using less fuel to do so. And it costs the same price as a Mondeo to service.

As a posemobile it's useless, as a workhorse it's very good.

And personally I'm glad that I can pick up cheap ones, I have no desire to buy what's popular, I simply want a vehicle for the job.

No, absolutely and utterly correct. I had a MkII Golf, infact several I had a Syncro when I worked in Switzerland, and a GL in the UK. They were utterly s**te cars. In fact the Citroen BX that I bought around the same time pissed on the Golf for every aspect of the motoring experience.

I'm no motoring guru either but I've owned Golfs and other cars which were much better for the money. And given the choice between a MkIII and a Mondeo for the same money, I'll take the Mondeo.

No, it's one of the most over-rated cars, ever.

Yup, people who buy s/h Golfs are knobheads willing to pay good money for a relatively cack car. But we already know this. The same drivers when they get enough dosh go on to buy BMW 316s, same rules apply.

I've never pretended to be a good typist, or to care. Indeed every time you start on this tedious crap I point this out.

The definition of libel on usenet is the same as it is anywhere else. The fact that you're too thick to spot the difference between insult and libel is your problem bozo.

I'd like to see someone make a fuel stop in less than 30 minutes. I've never got it down to just 10 anywhere. Not least because at every motorway service station you have to form a queue behind the coachload of pensioners from Ramsgate doing a world tour of Europe and every sodding one of them determined to buy a bag of Werthers and to pay by cheque or credit card.

You hear wrong, the gearbox is the same unit used in the Ranger/F150 and there's nothing wrong with it. You may be thinking of the transfer box which was piss poor on a number of Explorers sold around 1996-1998.

The other thing to take with a pinch of salt is that the Explorer sells in huge numbers, hence any fault is seen in large numbers even for small percentages.

It seems like you say this about nearly every car you've admitted to owning.

You're obviously based on the Golf floorpan yourself.

I've had three... I've owned a fair number their contemporaries as well

- fair enough, your experiences with various Golfs have led you to believe they're not the car for you, whereas I've found the opposite.

And so have plenty of others, as reflected in most of the owner reviews you'll find on the net. :-)

No 'disprespect', but carry on like that and I may have to consult a team of lawyers that specialise in libel!

ROTFL... for someone I'd normally have a begrudging respect for in here, you're coming across as a right, (and I quote), 'k*****ad' yourself today, Mr Firth.

It's not time of the month by chance, is it? :-)

Yes, I may be a pussy, but you'll find me appearing on 'Animal Hospital' any time soon either. ;-)

All that aside... bikes... I love bikes.

It's one of the things I reckon endears me so much to Mr Firth for one thing, but that aside...

I like riding them for pleasure - doing 800 miles a week on one in heavy traffic and invariably shitty weather would soon make me fall out of love with them.

It doesn't *have* to be that way though... hmm... who's based where exactly?

Mr Bun*cough*Firth, no 'disprespect', but you've cried libel wolf so many times in here in the past, people are actually beginning to set their watches by it!

It's actually quite amusing and I for one would *really* like to see you bring a case about based upon what I mentioned I *suspected*, earlier on in this thread. :-)
