1987 Camry windows stay up or down. I have to open and close drivers side door a few times till I get them to work. Would the problem likely be a damaged wire in the wire harness between the door and body, or, in the door?? Thanks for any advice (yeah, I know.....get a new car).

From what yer decribing, sounds like the handle/lock control arms may be in the way of the window moving up and down, maybe interfering with the regulator. This would be the case if the window is trying to move, but cannot. You would be able to hear the motor groaning. If the motor is unresponsive until you assault the door, then maybe you have a loose/damaged wire. Pop off that door panel and check er out.
