'65 bug value?

There's a '65 beetle near my house and the owners want to sell...I don't need a project but I figure maybe I can buy it and then sell it to make a few bucks...

Details: '65 sedan, complete and all original. Red paint has gone bad. Body solid, original engine. Car ran and drove 2 years ago when they parked it...interior shabby but not trashed, has orig. door panels and radio. Trunk lid, front bumper bashed in a little, front right fender bashed a lot. not much rust that I can see. Basically, a really good candidate for restoration. Location: Houston, TX

What should I offer? My guess is $750, maybe sell for $1000-1300. Does this sound reasonable?

Charles,.....................In houston..............I'd offer a lot less or just see what they want for it.

I usually start way low to get a feel for their desire, and let it go up from there If I am the first to offer a number.

I bought a 93 astro cargo van that way. Started with 500 bucks ( they had 1500 on the windshield ) ...............they declined. After a couple more weeks of no bites I offered tham 700. Still declined but still talking. They stood by their 1500, then backed down and said they'd take 1200 after a bit, so I offered them 900 even and they bit. I got a steal on the van, as it only needed a o2 sensor to pass inspection, has decent tires and brakes and I replaced the windshield as a preference and it's pulling bugs around like a pro.

^ that's just an example of a dickering act that worked. I have had lots more that didn;t do well at all also.

Good luck though.

Thanks for the support. I guess I just have to be comfortable with the fact that they may want more than I can offer.

At least they know they have a car worth finding a home for, one major reason for knocking on the owner's door was just to make sure they weren't going to have it towed away to the salvage yard or something like that. That would have been the worst case scenario.

If it's an investment... fixing the paint situation would be part of the plan.... people like shiny cars. "Project Cars" may be worth slightly less than your target price.

I was just hoping to pick it up cheap then resell it as is. That's why I'm thinking so hard about what to offer...low enough so I'll make a few hundred dollars or something.

Just my 2 cents:

There is a place in NoCal, LeVere's or something.... Anyway a few years back their WEB site they'd restore your Bug for $9k, or you could buy theirs for $10k. From that I surmized a complete mostly rust free bug is worth about $1k. Good luck making a profit :).
