Why are there two types of ball joints for the 68 type 1? What is different?

Upper and lower are different. Look in your manual and you'll see how they are pressed in from opposite sides in order to carry the load on the trailing arms.

As Mycoran said, ball joints were the same for all years ('66-78). Only tie rods were beefed up starting late in the '68 model.
