I was still el3cted and I'd be more than happy to see another "vote".
John,
I'm afraid you haven't paid attention to what I wrote. I don't blame you though, I wrote way too much.
Anyway, my point is I am NOT defending Mario. I am not blaming him either, at least not directly, as I have no first hand experience.
All I'm saying that you people are posting TOO MANY "warnings" as you put it. LESS is more effective. I never asked you to stop doing it altogether?

...............I'm sorry Jan but I can't let this one go without blasting the $h!+ out of you.......
........You need to be a little more than a semi-literate doofus to understand most automobile engine management systems these days. You don't have to be an academic but you do need to be able to read and understand what's written in a shop manual. In the old days, this wasn't so true as it is now. The guys who farted around with cars without really knowing what they were doing have gone into the paint & body shop business along with maybe doing some minor 'tuneups'. There's one of these clueless losers in N. Carolina who actually posts here occasionally.

My cars are from the "old days", I have no modern cars... except for that turbo Subaru.. and even that beast is only an 86, the only "modern" thing in it is the ECU.
I was talking about our aircooled Volkswagens, as I should in this group. No rocket science. The "old days" knowledge is *still* all you need to fix an aircooled VW, the CARS haven't changed.
Those are still a breed apart from the actual car mechanics (however old school you want to call them) who studied CAR REPAIR, took courses and learned their profession at some vocational school for example. Today they'd either jump on the ECU and computer diagnose bandwagon, or stick with the older technology they know so well. In both cases they'd STILL know what to do with older cars. (Which again is where my, and this group's interests are)
A white collar academic with perfect punctuation and sentence structure and spelling won't convince me. I'd rather have someone with dirt under his cracked fingernails work on my car, even more so if he can show 30 years of professional car repair work and a few greasy old diplomas from a related field. Lucky me, I have one such resource to rely on if need be.
As a matter of fact, I have learned that modern day car mechanics (graduated less than 10 years ago) don't even know the "old school" technology anymore. I.e. they have no idea what to do if I bring in an aircooled VW. Today's trend seems to be "replace the broken part" rather than "Repair the broken part". Hence, they'd be helpless because their parts suppliers (even VW) don't carry that stuff anymore. Nobody knows how to REPAIR anything, because it is not cost effective, and not required anymore of a car "mechanic".
Yea, I would never bring an old car to a new mechanic, no matter how "good" he is by today's standards. I don't NEED today's standards, they are worthless to me.
I have personally wintessed professional (modern day) car mechanics botching up simple jobs that I could have done better myself. And no, I have never received formal training in the field of mechanics of any kind.
The more I know these "new age" mechanics, the more I appreciate the work of the old farts who actually knew what they were doing.
IF I had a new car.. like built after 1998 or something.. then I might allow a "new age" mechanic touch it, with his computer probes and shop manuals ready. I might even shy away from the local illiterate grease-monkey who's shop parking lot only has cars older than 1978.

Jan is right. This is less fun every time it re-ignites as it has less flames and more smoke. It is starting to smell. The reason I started this thread was to see where the others had gone during this war and I received one valid forum to check out. The rest of this returned to the same old crap and started to smoke. John, as far as warning new people about Mario, just put it on your signature and actively engage in each topic the "newbes" post so they can see the warning like on a pack of smokes. Or you can wait until the only ones left to warn will be Mario himself and maybe Jan if he hasn't shot himself by then. Just my opinion of course. Dennis

Depends. Should I be proud of the fact that I'll never be able to eat pizza again because you've filled my mind with images of chopped up, bloody pieces of horse on a self rising crust? Hmm... since you're the one that likes pizza so much... you shouldn't be too proud of yourself because now you can guarantee I'll never be bringing it home for dinner. :D So I guess I should thank you. Kiitos, Kulta!! *iso pusi* LOL

..... Sometimes you don't make any sense at all. Are you aware of that? Just wondering, because if you didn't know I feel I should inform you. :D *snick*
I didn't say knowing how to spell said anything about your mechanical abilities. I said essentially that *I* wouldn't let an idiot work on my car (except you, baby). It does NOT take 10-20 years to learn how to "please academic nitpicks". It takes a 5th grade education. And I'm not a nitpick. I'm an intelligent person that doesn't understand how someone who went to "college" can still spell and write like they're in 2nd grade. It was all just PERSONAL opinion. I didn't expect anyone to understand my obsession with grammar and spelling. But you already know about it so why are you surprised?

I can Agree here. I graduated in 85 from a vocational school (auto mechanics), I have a neighbor who graduated in 2002 and he made a comment when I was working on an older car (not aircooled) he said something about me being "old school". I've watched him work on a couple of his friends car, he'll never touch anything of mine. Damn scary that they don't seem to teach basic mechanics anymore or he just didn't grasp it. Dave

There is a great mechanic in Ashland Oregon who is tired of all the "water-cooled crap" on the road these days. He will be keeping his main shop open, but is thinking of opening an air-cooled VW shop out on his property and retiring to it. the shop is Euro-Mek, and is located in Ashland at 564 A St.

anything of mine. Damn scary that they don't
Well, I wouldn't rule someone out just because they were educated. I don't think that common sense and intelligence are mutually exclusive.
However, I generally wouldn't let anyone at all work on my cars unless there was some reason I couldn't do the work myself. I don't trust any other mechanics, educated or old-school. :)

I would opine that aqs long as the little thieving asshole is still on this group, that everyone should be warned anytime he posts about something for sale or trade. We have enough knowledgable people in this group that we can do without any advice that he gives. I personally don't believe a word he types. The people he has screwed over have been around a lot longer than him and I trust their evidence in this matter.
My 2 cents.

My opinion again....I don't believe that a fact based warning about a known thief is a Flame. It is what it is, a Warning. All Mario has to do is go away and it will stop. He rufuses to admit that he is a convicted thief and innocent buyers should be warned.

Okay, I am going to chime in with my 2 cents on this-
I have dealt with Mario, aka kafertoys. I traded him a set of strange front turn signals, for a (known to me beforehand) broken horn-ringed EMPI VDM wheel.
I sent him the turn signals. He sent me the wheel.
No muss, no fuss, just a straight-across trade, with each person paying their own postage.
I know that John C (and maybe others) have had issues with him, or maybe the others are just jumping on the bandwagon; I dunno. I don't know either side of the John C/ Mario fiasco, nor do I want to. Neither "combatant" has tried to tell me their side of the story, and I am thankful. I don't know, don't need to know, and don't want to know.
My experience with Mario, aka kafertoys, was pleasant, fast, honorable, and truthful.
FWIW.
Flaming me, or e-mailing me with "but he did this" or "but he did that" will be met with an instant killfile. I know John C. I know Mario. Both are welcome at casa kaferdave, anytime. (Although probably not at the SAME time.....)

No disrespect, but you might want to check the dates on these things when you've been away for a few days. Once they die, it's best to just let them die and not bring it up again to start all over. So says the Spelling/Grammar Queen.

"fact based"?? I've seen no verifiable facts posted by either side. Only accusations and innuendo. I assume by your post that you have personally verified the accusations. Please post your results for all to see. Until then, I, for one, will remember that this is usenet, where anyone can say anything about anybody with relative impunity.

give me your FAX # and I'll send you a copy of 2 lawsuits that were found against Mario Gavazzi. But then again he'll just claim they are fabrications, lies, or the judge was "rigged", right?
