idiot lights on, switch off

Hullo All,



I recently had my engine rebuilt but on fitting it back into my '66 beetle (converted to 12v by PO, has alternator), both idiot lights come on (even with the switch off).



I have not attempted to start it as I don't want to mess anything up.



Any thoughts on what can cause both lights to come on when the switch is off.

the Blk wire from the switch where it plugs onto thefuse block. Pull that wire off and see if the lights go off.(That would implicate the switch.) Still no joy, pull the Blu wire off the alternator D+ terminal. If that kills the lights, the alternator has an internal problem or is wired incorrectly.

It turns out that the alternator is the culprit (got a local vw mechanic to double check my findings).
