short axle in a 67 bug

I have a AIRS repair I am helping on tonight and want to know if it would be better to put a short axle tranny in a 67 bug, he plans on wide low 17" wheels on his car. I don't have a spare 67 tranny and an willing to setting him up with a good tranny from a 65 if it will help him get back to Texas and set his car up better to do this conversion.

Thanks Mario Vintage werks resto

I don't know how pertinent this is-

The '65 tranny will have poor ratios if he has an engine bigger than 40 HP.

'65 won't accept a 12V flywheel/starter without mods.

Well the 65 tranny went in and he is back on the road heading for texas a very happy dubber. Apperantly his 67 tranny was in real bad shape because he said it now shifts much smoother and drives better. The 67 bug is very low so hes not worried about speed as much as he was about getting some fat rear tires on it. The 65 tranny brought the wheels in and he really liked the look. It is also a right hand drive conversion that I got to drive and very much enjoyed.
