A2 Distributor cap question

Just got a new dist. cap for my 1.8L 8V GTI (1991, Digifant).

Here it is...old is on the left, new on the right:

Every cap I've ever bought looked like the one on the left (had an outer "cover" and some metal thing).

So what's up w/the one on the right? If I hold them up to one another they look the same (same inner size, etc.). Should I attempt to remove the black cover from the old one and re-use it on the new one or what? Or just put the new one on? And what's that cover and the metal thing for?

Think you got cheated on the right cap. The cover has to do with radio interference and EMF. As you know anytime there is a spark it produces electronic radiation somewhat similar to your local AM/FM/TV stations. The shield reduces this transmission of such EMF. They say it prevent possible interference which could mess things up with the electronic fuel injection. Sounds good don't it, can it cause problems, I don't know... but that's what our instructors say!

Most folks just chuck that in the garbage. I have experimented and have found no differences with or w/o that radio suppression metal item installed, on several VW's.....

Just switch the "cover" over to the new cap, if it is the same size cap. I have seen caps with a wider base. Or try it without! I have found that these covers CAN affect the AM reception in the radio creating static. I usually make sure the metal portion of the cover is clean along with the clip that connects on it.

Huh, I've never bought a cap that looked like the one on the left. Can you swap the cover?

Sort of. I got it from parts4vws.com and their description said "with metal suppressor" yet it arrived w/o one despite the numbers on the box matching up.

What's more disappointing is that the new cap chipped when I went to put it on the car:

I was able to swap the cover over to the new one though and it covers the chip so I think I'll be OK (I hope!).

Yep...swapped it. I dimly remember a few times before buying a cap at the local flaps and each time they asked about my VIN...like maybe it was a mid-year change to use the cap w/the cover.
